I'd think there was something wrong if you were into this hobby and DIDN'T do that.

I usually have to press some buttons to see if they are MS or leaf. I hate when I find a really bad conversion with a multicade board in it.
They Killed Tron.

You Bastard!

Yep, I do that too.

I did that once with a game that wasn't ours.  Called their service number and told him what was up.  He was like, "um...you work in the industry, don't you..."  and I was like "yeah, we're one of your lesser competitors, but I couldn't stand to see the game like that, so it's a courtesy call."

I find myself checking out cabs and comparing them to my design to see if I like mine better, or if I need to change something.

Yep, I used to go into Wallmart, and compare my "in progress" cab to the Gauntlet they had there.  I whip out my ruler, and measure the distance between the buttons, the size of the bezel, etc....

The greeter thought I was nuts....asked me what I was doing...when I told him, he kinda had that "back away slowly, but keep eye contact" look about him... ???

I do the same thing with PC's....wife hates it....I'll walk into a business, or a friends house...and say...you know that (insert vendor name here) computer is crap, right?....no USB2.0, only a Celeron, crappy video, "where's the RAM"?

The people that don't talk to me before they buy a PC.....hate me (I pull no punches)  :lame:

The local hockey rink has about a dozen classics and a few others.  I love looking at the Hard-Drivn' situp cab with the monitor mounted in the top, and the mirror at a 45deg angle to reflect the pic towards the viewer.

Also I notice a lot more signs of abuse like cigarette burns or vandalism.

Until you mentioned it, I guess I thought it was normal behavior.

My other hobby is women and I find myself doing the same thing a lot with those "machines" too, only it's not just limited to pizza joints and other businesses.

You "have to go over and not just play, but examine as well"?

Yeah, we have thise type of "machines" here too, 'specially downtown, late at night.

I'll bet you pay more that $.50 a "credit" though  ;)

Yeah, I click every button, rotate every stick, check the monitor for burn-in, and check how sturdy the CP is attached.

I should probably stop, but it's not like it's illegal (or even immoral) to molest and arcade machine.

I look for illegal MAME cabs. Surprisingly, I found a few in my travels.  :police:

I do the same.

Additionally, I work in architecture so I'm no longer free to just use a building.  I have to assess the design mechanical systems etc...

Everyone does this.  Especially with their career.  I have friends who are dental hygenists and they say the first thing they notice about everyone they meet is their teeth.
