I know this is off topic, but I have a poll on my website that some of you might find fun to talk about -
What game is considered the most classic of them all? (there are ten choices)
http://www.licoricepizza.com
-
What.... no Pong ??? ;)
-
Well it's not super OT, but you know you coulda just done a poll HERE instead of having us go to your site to vote...
(that sounds harsher than I mean it to)... I just want to point out that we have poll functionality built into the msg board... and makes more sense to have the poll here as I don't visit your site often enough to be engaged in the results of the poll. *shrug*

DOH!
Sorry Rampy..The next poll I dream up I will duplicate on this msg board. I will also add PONG to my list...how did I forget PONG??

No Mr. DO?
Is the poll supposed to be whats most classic or whats your favorite classic game of the 10?
-
Well, I was just trying to narrow it down to about 10 classic games, all of which are totally biased of course...but I'll add Mr. Do and any others you guys want, I am not picky :)
-
darnit I already voted... i'll vote again tomorrow for mr. do.
Rampy
-
Rampy, who'd ya vote for? I can manually erase that vote and give you a vote for PONG...the CGI logs your IP so you won't be able to vote again for a while, so it's easier to do it this way...

Not PONG, but Mr Do!.... I need a drink...

As good as done my man.
-
How could you not list Joust? ??? :P ;D
-
My vote was also PAC but Mr Do and me are good friends. I feel like I betrayed him for not giving him the vote that he should have gotten. There was no place for write ins.... :'(
-
Joust is now added, and I added one of my all time favorites that I forgot...DEFENDER!
-
8bit, I fixed your sadness in regards to your vote :)
-

Might as well round out the williams classics with Robotron. BTW: I have all 3 of these cabs ;D.

:jealous:
joust is movin on up! :)

Go Galaga!!
I would even convert my Pac-Land to a Galaga if it wouldn't be so much expense and trouble (and the cab would look odd with Galaga in it :P).. I grew up playing predominately this game and Star Wars, so I gotta be faithful.
-
Is it me or does Rampy have a thing about poop ? :P ;D
-
Wait a sec! Where is Pengo? Oh wait, I hated pengo. That's right.
-
OOH, they all look so good, I don't know where to start!
Tempest gets my vote if you're talking about actually playing. I think Pac-Man is probably the most instantly recognizable classic, but I can think of a few games that are more interesting to play (which should also be on the list BTW...)
How about Asteroids, Battle Zone, Missile Command, or Frogger?
-
#1 Galaga (The game is over two decades old and still makes money in the arcades today ! )
#2 Space Invaders (didn't age very well but none the less a heavyweight as far as classics go.)
#3 Ms. Pac-Man Not one of my personal favorites but this isn't about me. Also brought more chicks into the arcades :D
#4 Pac-Man (Quickly overshadowed by Ms. Pac-Man but was the pioneer of maze games)
#5 Asteroids (Never saw an 80s" arcade without one)
#6 Donkey Kong (Even 20 years later if you're are lucky enough to find one you will probably still find yourself waiting for someone else to finish his game first.)
#7Defender. (This game is higher in my personal list but this a general list.
#8 Robotron (Not only was it fun to play but it was one of the first sounds I would hear when entering my favorite arcade. Because of its difficulty it probably rates much higher if this was a list of quarter eating games. By the time you got good at this game you probably made the owner/operator a hundred bucks richer.
#9 Centipede (Got me hooked on the world of trackball games.)
#10 Joust (More of a cult favorite rather then a mainstream
favorite but still earns the right to be on this list.)
It's sooo hard to list only ten games but I would think this would be somewhat accurate. I can sit here and say that I was impartial when ranking these games but the fact of the matter is I was the one who wrote it so it really doesn't mean $h1t and is ultimatly still just an opinion.
Still had fun writing it though. ;D
P.S. Pong used discrete circuitry and ain't no videogame in my book although it was a major breakthrough. Kudos to Ralph Baer Willy Higinbotham and Nolan Bushnell. Oh... and of course Eugene Jarvis later on.

I liked pheonix. Popeye was one I looked for each time I went to an arcade after I played it
edit "poof" sorry i don't know what i was thinking
I turned on a friend to MAME, and the first one he asked about was gyruss. then tutkhanhumum (spelling?)
-
errr, Pole Position is already one of the selections....
Asteroids is an obvioous ommission...and the more I think about it, Star Castle could have been thrown in there...The steady background hum used to fill the whole arcade! maybe there will be a part deux to this poll in a couple of weeks...
-

Hemmm...ah....er..edit! ya thats it.
edit
I voted for pole position
-
On thing I liked about popeye was that the coin mechanisms were messed up so if you flipped a penny in right it would register. I was quite the hooligan.
-
Ha...slugs are a thing of beauty...most of the time it was just Dad's change from ordering Pizza, and maybe a buck or two depending on how many beers he'd have...
-
Where's Robotron???!!! :'(
Well, I guess second choice will be for Defender.
/me is jealous of the dude with the 3 Williams cabs too...
-
I had to vote for Pac-Man, the icon of the 80's! Has any other video game character ever been Time's Man of the Year?
Other equally good contendors, as far as I'm concerned...
Berzerk
Galaxian
Robotron
-
I agree, Berzerk and Robotron were should have been on the list. Here's the top games that didn't make the list for no other reason than I tried to limit it to 10 games (but I added a few the first day). If I add a few now it will really skew results.
There will be part deux in a week or so. Maybe I'll rig up something where everyone can rank the games, rather than just voting for 1...let me dig into my CGI books and references!
In no particular order...
Asteroids
Berzerk
Robotron
Joust
Frogger
Missile Command
Atari Football (1st trac ball game)
Major Havoc
Spy Hunter
Monaco Grand Prix
Star Wars
Gorf
Popeye
Lunar Lander
Turbo
Any others? Trying to stay 1984 ish and older
-
i have to say that as far as an iconic status...Pac-Man is the one..but a real classic would be one of the earliest games...pre 1980...like Space Invaders. I think that game really sparked interest in video games.
A couple of my alltime favs are Joust, Galaga, Tron, Donkey Kong, Frogger, Berzerk, Dig Dug, Tempest..ah too many to list!!!! :-*

Ok ok 1UP. You got 1up on me :-X Oh, and no more pulling out dictionaries and encyclopedias around here ! Ican't compete with them. I have enough trouble spelling let alone stating truthfull facts. ;D
-
Heh, I was beginning to wonder when someone would read that...
