Title: 2 1/4" or 3" trackball for cocktail table??
Post by: squirrellydw on April 07, 2006, 09:13:48 am
Should I use a 2 1/4" or 3" trackball for my cocktail table?  It would be mounted on the 3rd control panel.  I think I would like the 3" but not 100% sure.  What games use a 3" trackball, golden tee right??  Did Marble Madness and Crystal Castles use 2 1/4"??

Thanks

There is no right or wrong answer to this. What you have to take into consideration is the footprint of the various trackballs and how you would accomdate them in the space you have available on the control panel. A game that originally used a 3" trackball is going to work the same with a 2 1/4".

Golden Tee might be difficult to play on a cocktail though (unless you like hurting your fingers on the follow through!)

If you want to know the original sizes, go and look on www.klov.com

No trackball on the 1 or 2 palyer side? What about centipede, all time classic.

GT is one of the top arcade games out there for many years running. People of all generations (mostly people over 45) like to play it.

Why not mount the trackball at a angle or raise it to the level of of the glass top like I did.

Also, I cant imagine playing GT on a 2 1/4. It might not have the weight to spin right, yet I am guessing because I haven't tried GT on a 2 1/4.

I think I am going to use a 3" on the 3rd panel.  As for playing the classics I will have a 27" monitor so if I am correct, playing a 19" vertical game should be close to the same as playing it on a 27" horizontal monitor.

As for finding the size of the trackballs on KLOV, I didn't see it listed anywhere

I'd think if you were mounting it on a where cocktail where normal cocktail control panels mount a 2 1/4 would do as good if not better.  The main reason for having the 3"/4" track balls is the big swing throughs like playing atari football/golden tee/world tour bowling.   On the smaller control panels with less area for follow through, I think you would get overall better game play/better control with the smaller trackball, since you need less area for follow through with them.
