I will preface this by saying I haven't read the FAQ, but I am at work and I can't waste that much time. ;)
I am going to create a MAME cabinet and I have a few questions.
I have decided to use a 27" RCA TV with S-video outputs for my monitor. Will a 27" TV fit inside an older cabinet? MK I or Berzerk/Defender style? Would I be better off just building a cabinet around the TV? I am not a woodworker by any stretch of the imagination. :-\ I think I could pull off building one though.
Has anyone done a comparisson in cost between buying a blank control shelf from slikstick, adding the components yourself and buying their CO2 model complete?
Finally why does SlikStik have the plate above their trackball instead of under teh Formica? Is there a specific reason for this? access maybe?
Yeah I could ask slikstik myself, but I'd rather have neutral opinions. Thanks!

Well, first I have to say building a cabinet is fun:0
However, you may want to think about if you are going to convert a cabinet to get one with an arcade monitor in it and using ArcadeVGA (www.ultimarc.com).
You could build your own CP too, it's just a box:)

I have a Defender cabinet. A 27 inch TV will never come close to fitting inside it.
If you want to use a 27 inch TV, building a cab is the way to go in my opinion. Although some modern cabs would hold one.

At least your honest. The faq answers most questions and will allow you to ask better more focused questions. By reading the faq and asking specific questions you are more likely to get answers.
A 27" tv is to big for most older cabinets, but it depends on the cabinet and the tv. Note most 27" tvs won't fit through a door the wide way. You want one without speakers on the sides. Your cab needs to be able to fit through a door. Many of the MK combats were 25" monitors and its tough to find a 25" tv to fit into them but its doable. I think berzerk and defender cabs were 19" monitors.
The only commercial stick I know of that is close to what the components cost is the x-arcade. I don't know how they make any money. Actually I do, they mass produce and use inexpensive components.
Most trackballs are mounted to a plate. If you formica over the plate you can't remove the trackball. I think most authentic arcade games covered the plate with artwork and then plexi.

If you want to build a cab from scratch you should check out the plans at http://www.mameroom.com these are very nice cabs and the plans are available for mounting either an x-arcade or a SlikStik.

I wish someone would have told me that before I put a 27" in my Defender cabinet :).
But realistically, it was not a fun project. The case had to be completely removed, the board had to be remounted with standoffs, and the tube had to held in by a rather unique method, to say the least ;) .
On the bright side, there seems to have been a recent proliferation of 25" S-video capable sets. Most of these will slide in with no modifications.

I have a capcom bowling cabinet which wont fit anything larger then a 25" TV, and even that would probably BARELY fit....

I'm thinking of putting in a 25" in a Pengo cabinet, but I just haven't measured it. We'll see when I get some time off.

I was able to get a 27" into a Power Drive cabinet with the box and all. Of course it was a 3 player machine to begin with, which was one of the reasons I picked that cab. Width is always a nice thing to have.
