Title: Can somebody recommend...
Post by: J_K_M_A_N on April 06, 2006, 11:52:46 am
A motherboard/CPU combo from newegg? I haven't built a computer for quite a while and I don't know what is what now. I am looking for something from AMD that would be close to the older Athlon XP's specs. When I got my XP 2000+ it was like $85. I see the Athlon 64's are $121 or more. I am looking for something in the lower price range if possible.

Anyone?

you can probably get a socket 754 Sempron in that price range, although I'd recommend spending the extra $20 or so and getting a 3000+ socket 939 chip as it'd give you more room for upgrades in the future.

You can find a 3000+ cheap used nowadays, and a socket 939 board can be had for similar prices to other motherboards.

For the slightly higher price, I'd say the Athlon64 is worth it, although if you are only doing MAME, you don't really need that much power, and you could just grab a cheap computer based on a AXP 2500+ or similar.

Well, this is for someone else. It is pretty much going to be used for email and office type crap. They have an account setup on newegg with a credit card and I don't want to mess with ordering from somewhere else. I have an Athlon XP 2000+ with a shuttle ak38N motherboard. That is about what I am looking for for them. They have about $300 and they need a hard drive and cd burner/dvd burner and a case and memory so it needs to be kind of cheap. Thanks for any and all help.

At this point, I am kinda thinking of getting a sempron. Not wild about it but it isn't for me. :)

Don't know if it helps, but NewEgg also has refurbished motherboards and processors at a good discount.

They go quickly, but I think they at new motherboards a little before 11:00 EST on Wednesdays (at least last time I shopped them).

Don't know if that is something you would consider for a machine for someone else, but it's an option.
