i want my cab to be black.
i will need primer but what kind primer would i need? and what color primer?
what kind of paint is good? i don't want it to be shiny.

Kilz interior primer and have them tint it for black paint. I used a Semi-gloss acrylic interior and it looks fine.

Me and a BYOAC buddy have been getting good results using black semi-gloss latex based paint.
I am using Rustoleum Painter's Touch gray primer (it has the number 1980 on the can) and Rustoleum Painter's Touch semi-gloss black multi-purpose latex paint (it has the number 1974 on the can) .
I used a styrofoam roller to apply the paint. The finish is not shiny, but not so dull either.
I tried Rustoleum Painter's Touch gloss black multi-purpose latex paint (#1979) before but did not like the results. It was way too shiny.

A semi-gloss is a good choice if you do not want a shiny finish. A matte finish paint is accepts stains easier and scuffs easier than a semi.

I'm at this stage as well.
Has anyone had trouble with MDF warping when they apply primer? I've heard this can happen and wanted to avoid it.
I read somewhere that you can make a mixture of yellow glue and water (1-to-3 ration) and apply it first to the MDF. Then let it dry, sand, and apply the primer. Of course, if nobody's had this problem (MDF absorbing primer and warping), I'd like to avoid the extra step.
Any thoughts?

Nope. Just paint the sucker.... MDF paints real easy. The cut edges that show - like on your CP edges tend to soak up the paint quite a bit so sand them to a smooth finish and you won't have a problem.

I've had no problems painting MDF. I've always used a latex primer, then semi-gloss latex paint. I used thin coats and sanded between each coat, 2 coats of primer and 5 coats of paint, made for an extremely nice finish.

ok last question should i prime and paint the cp top? i'm going to put artwork on it and arcyic glass sheet on top as well.
-
it HAS TO BE Hammerite for the black finish on your cab.

I did, I figured an extra bit of protection to keep moisture from getting in couldn't hurt and it wasn't much more work since I was already painting all the other pieces.

Atomsmasher: Did you use one of those foam rollers or did you use a paint gun? I'm wondering if I really need to buy a paint gun to get a great finish on my cab...

I used a foam roller, a paint gun would of probably been a lot faster, but a roller worked just as well. Just remember to make the coats thin, if you used white primer then you should be able to see some white through the paint until the second coat is on, maybe even the third coat. Lightly sand and wipe it down with a damp rag (to remove any dust from sanding) after each coat.

Yes. Hammerite has provided me with such a quality textured finish on my cab, you cant tell that it has been painted at all!
Its really thick too / strong stuff that will withstand all types of knocks/abuse.

I have access to an airlress paint gun for when I paint my cab. I'll make sure to get some pics up of that to show the results. I've painted wood with it before (outside of a shed) and it goes on easily.

darthbane2K: So you just used spray cans of this Hammerite to paint your cab and you're really happy with it? I'm assuming because it is textured that all you did was prime and then spray with a coat or two?
