Title: Wiki category "work in progress"
Post by: Felsir on March 29, 2006, 03:21:19 am
I created a new section: http://wiki.arcadecontrols.com/wiki/Category:Work_in_progress (http://wiki.arcadecontrols.com/wiki/Category:Work_in_progress). I know the whole Wiki is a continuous 'work in progress' however these pages are a bit special- let me explain:

There are some pages where there is a discussion on how the pages should work or what the layout should be. A good example is the Jukebox software (http://wiki.arcadecontrols.com/wiki/Jukebox_Software) page. As you can see on the Jukebox talk page (http://wiki.arcadecontrols.com/wiki/Talk:Jukebox_Software), there was a discussion about how to present information in a sensible way.

Now, what is the difference with the "cleanup" tag? Basically, the "cleanup" tag invites any individual to clean the article up. Change the formatting, make things more readable or expand sections that are clearly in need of more content.
The "work in progress" tag invites the contributors to participate in the discussion on how a page should work.
In the case of the jukebox or Console emulation (http://wiki.arcadecontrols.com/wiki/Console_Emulators) pages, the entire layout was replaced by a table. The talk pages discussed on what should go in or could be left out of the table. The discussion approach was chosen to make sure the page would end up 'good in one go' and there was some sort of reason behind the whole thing.

Work in progress pages are still information hungry - so if you do not want to participate in the discussion but have content to add: please add! Look for a place that looks suitable and edit. The "WIP-people" will move the content to its' final place once they made their decision on the layout.

The template tag looks like this:
Code: [Select]
{{WorkInProgress|talk:Console Emulators}}The talk page parameter is included because some pages that are similar are part of one "work in progress project". Example: console emulators and handheld emulators are similar so they probably end up alike so both point to the same talk page.

Comments (or questions) on the subject are greatly appreciated.

Good call -- I like the distinction.
