Title: DSL Speed troubleshooting help please.
Post by: Santoro on March 28, 2006, 11:33:47 am
So I am baffled.

I live in New Jersey and have 1500Kbps service.  Using http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/ , tests show that I am getting ~7-900 kpbs down.  This is true for all cities but Seattle, which shows me operating at almost perfect speed, ~1440.

So is this possible?  It seems to me that if these results are right, my connection is fine, but the Verizon network is causing my download speeds to diminish to most locations. I am theorizing that the Seattle test server is closer to Verizon's network somehow.

So how can I nail this down?  I posted at dslreports.com too.

{edit:Atlanta works well too.}

Thanks

I tried the tests here and all my downloads are consistent, uploads varied from 567-1081.

Downloads:

SEA 1385
SF 1384
LA 1379
DAL 1378
CHI 1378
ATL 1381
NY 1379
DC 1374

I have no idea if this helps you in anyway...

Those "speed" tests especially from DSLREPORTS are unreliable at best. Your speed test from one of those servers will always be impacted by the number of people using that server at the same time.  With that being said you can always do a trace route to say www.yahoo.com to see what Verizon switching house is handling your data. Downloading packs from USENET is usually a pretty good indicator of what kind of speed you can really D/L at.

I test with this site:
http://www.bandwidthplace.com/speedtest/

It's pretty reliable. I was having trouble for a while with my speed. I'd have to reset my DSL modem fairly frequently. I think it was because I had "dirty" power for a while. One of my mains breakers was on its way out and we'd get dips in power, flickering lights, etc. That probably messed up the modem somehow. Ever since the mains breaker was replaced, the problem has gone away.

What about upload speeds?  I'm on the expensive $30 a month Verizon plan and my upload, according to Speakeasy, never exceeds 100 kb/sec.

Pretty crappy, if you ask me.  But I wonder if you guys think that's normal?

Cheers,
KenToad

*EDIT*  It is not normal and I am in the middle of an odyssey with Verizon Tech Support to get the problem sorted out.
