Ok, I've been looking at marquees for hours now, looking for ideas to make my own. Then I figured, why not ask everyone else what they like? So I want to know, what is the best looking marquee you've seen? Let's see good custom ones AND originals. I found some for games I never even heard of, but had really cool marquees (good artwork, design, fonts, characters, ect). So which ones do you folks like the best???
-
I custom made mine and I like it the best....but I haven't really offered to share it yet :)
-
There are some good ones on this site: http://www.emdkay.net/

I like the idea of making something reminiscent of a classic marquee. That's what I did with mine! You can get it at http://www.oscarcontrols.com/cgi-bin/countdown.cgi?pacmameaV107.zip (http://www.oscarcontrols.com/cgi-bin/countdown.cgi?pacmameaV107.zip)
The ones I don't like are the ones with a million tiny screenshots. Too cluttered if you ask me. A marquee should read well from a few feet away. Look at real marquees--very simple designs. Pick a few of your favorite characters, and use a simple, clean logo. Oscar has some good Mame logos as well as some classic game art -- http://www.oscarcontrols.com/gallery01.htm (http://www.oscarcontrols.com/gallery01.htm)
Good luck!

I like the simpler ones as well... what I don't like is the montages that are almost arbitary in the character choices.
i.e. different art styles... cartooney ones, mixed with electronic looking ones, mixed with 3d shaded looking ones. I think a consistent/clean look looks to most professional.
Granted mine is cheezy ( I just changed the letters Donkey Kong to read UBERCADE ) but it works for me.
Oh, and for the love of GAWD refrain from adding a lens flare =P

I agree simple tends to be better. I don't like the hundrends of screenshots either, or the ones that just have a bunch of characters pasted in a collage.
IUP - think you did a superb job, great original design. Built by MYWAY - LOL
JAKOBUD - Hurry up and share with the rest of us!!
-
Here's mine, not as nice as 1 UPs but looks great on my yellow and green cabinet. I had to add extra black around the borders because my marquee area is actually oval.

Galaxian and Galaga each had the perfect balance of style and simplicity. You could recognize a Gala* machine from across a smokey arcade.
The edge goes to Galaga for the black background and wicked blade-like outline (right Birdtales?).
My cocktail table doesn't get to have a marquee, but if it did, it would match the color scheme of the whole cabinet. Some of the every-inch-filled-with-every-cool-character-from-every-game-ever marquees that get shown on the board are fun to look at by themselves, but it seems to me they would be very hard to integrate into a cabinet design.
-
I like mine best personally ;)

I do have to agree with 1Up. Steer well clear of montages with millions of characters. I personally think you should stick to a theme. Something simple and relevant to the name of your cabinet works best. The most proffesional looking marquees I have seen on BYOAC are relatively simple!

Yes I liked the Blade of Galaga (plus it's my second favorite game), hence the basis of my Marquee. Unfortunately I chose the name before I found out about the Xbox Mame project Mame-X.

I'm kinda partial to my custom marquee 8)

Hey!!! A lens flare is the central theme of mine! It's even on my startup screen...

I'm another who doesn't like a million characters / screenshots in a marquee. I think a marquee should look as if it could've been on a real machine...it is difficult tho to get that feel without being *too* game specific.
I know I'm probably in the minority here but I also don't like MAME logo artwork in general for cabs (sorry)...
-
Shockingly enough, I'm kind of partial to mine. It's reasonably authentic, not at all cluttered, and works great with a backlight (only the letters and characters glow).

mine of course! but it was made by pixelhugger...hes got mad skillz!!!

Thanks to 3dmacman...Here is mine:

but it was made by pixelhugger
Thanks Hulk! :)
I'm going to break with the trend here and say that while my own designs are favorites of mine my personal favorite isn't one of my own. The credit goes to Rom for this piece of art
(http://www.arcadecontrols.com/files/Uploads/marqueenz9f.jpg)
Rom- you absolutely blew my mind with that! Shortly after I thumbed thru Frosty's remarkable vectorial and ultimately gave in to his vectorevangelizing, heading away from my PhotoShop roots to work in Illustrator...which I had only grudgingly done before. The results of which, along with Hulksters marquee, are my other personal favorites.
The chrome and gel/neon effects are raster. Everything else is vector, including the glass.

My least favoite (to my constant frustration) is the chronic work in progress for my own cab. This is a rendering of what it will look like in position. I've learned a ton in making stuff for others on the board, so my next step is to apply all that to this marquee and make it something I'm really proud of like the rest of the stuff I've posted.

I know the feeling. Having done my design over a year ago I look at it now I'm not so sure if I will use it.
Before I decide I want to try and get a name nailed down first and see how it looks. I would love to pull something like "Playstation" or "Dreamcast" out of of my head alas it just aint happening.

I like AlexC's the best !! ;D
-
I second that...the one for AlexC is killer
...must....resist....temptation....to.....steal.....idea...argh
Oh and your new avatar is nice, but I really liked your old one, it was simple and clever. Huggin dem pixels. :)
-
Those of you who don't like thousands of screenshots won't like mine.
It's a photomosaic of all the screenshots I had.
I wish I'd gone for something a bit simpler, but no biggie.
-
I'm very partial to my marquee that Pixelhugger designed for me...he does fantastic work!
-
Did I ever give you the final Illustrator file for that Greywolf? :P
-
Hehe not yet, but I know you've been extremely busy with all your other projects. When you get the chance could you e-mail it to me :)

Can someone tell me where I can get this blue slikstick marquee without the slikstick text?? Or an easy way to make it in Photoshop. Thanks
It's the slikblue3.jpg above
Thanks

Personally, I don't

My personal favorite ! ;D

I liked so much, later I designed one very similar one to my pleasure:
This is definately one of the best! If it went with my blue MAME theme, I'd use it in a heartbeat. You should put this in one of the art libraries if it's not already there....
-
I really like the Mamestrosity marquee :) I do like it when the marquee makes it look like it could be an actual game.
My $0.05: I'm quite happy with my own marquee

Well, as long as everyone else is showing off, here's the one I designed for my cab.

Very nice!
-
Hiryu, your work is absolutely stunning! Is this stuff vector? Your CP (image pulled from another thread) is hands down the best I've seen posted IMHO.
Amazing!! Seeing this was the same sort of transformative epiphany as seeing Rom's Fusion for the first time. Incredible talent. Very inspiring stuff!!
And that Tron inspired marquee is genius as well. What I great idea for a cab name and a really cool design too. It seems like there are a lot of talented people making cool art that never gets posted. MORE MORE MORE!!!!!
-
Gas - email or PM me if you'd like the SlikStik file.
Jarret -PLEASE POST PICS OF THE CP/CAB..... NOW!!!! PLEASE! Droooool. :)
-
There is another good TRON-style marquee out there:

There's a link to a high-res version on his page at http://mywebpages.comcast.net/mr64source/mamecab/art.htm.

Jarret -PLEASE POST PICS OF THE CP/CAB..... NOW!!!! PLEASE! Droooool. :)
Um, I haven't gotten the side-art printed yet, but I have some comps I've been working on. I'll post them later when I get home.
And actually I'm going to make some changes to the marquee before getting it re-printed. The one I have came from classicarcadegrafix and looks like absolute ass.
Oh, and thanks for the drool ;D

Yeah, I cam across that when I was doing research from my cabinet. I didn't install the game or anything, but it looks interesting!
I decided to base my cabinet artwork strictly on the information available in the movie. Sadly, at Flynn's they never show the cabinet, marquee, or sideart, but they do show the control panel, which appears to be from TRON, oddly enough. So all I really had to go on was the billboard above Flynn's that reads HOME OF SPACE PARANOIDS. I took a screen cap from the DVD and worked backwards from there.
When the art is finalized, I plan to make it available to the community... somehow. All the graphics are 300dpi raster, so the files are pretty huge.
