I would love to know the details to the whole modem tracing bit. Not doubting you did it. Just that I work for the "cable company" in my area and for my internet connection I have multiple modems. Of the modems I use the IP addresess that they give off could be traced but in order to do so the cable company would need to be contacted so that they could tell you the address that belongs to "that" IP based on info from there account records. That said my cable modems are tied to locations roughly 8-18 miles from my home.......
It is possible to tie a modem to an account not of your own.
Any of this make any sense?

Most (if not all) internet users in the uk are on Dynamic IP addresses.
however I am just not normal.... I have a block of fixed IP addresses assigned by RIPE as I operate servers etc from here (so any quick lookup on my IP address will reveal not only my name, but also my company name, home address and telephone number (including mobile)
