Title: Old 15" PC monitor...is this normal?
Post by: Ninten-doh on March 20, 2006, 04:50:47 pm
I just picked up a 15" pc monitor at a garage sale for $1, and plan to use it for a bartop cab (vertical mount cab).  When I plugged it in and used it yesterday for about 3-4 hours, I noticed that the sides where the vents are were very hot, and there was a faint electrical burn smell.  Having used an LCD monitor for awhile now, I forget whether it is "normal" for a CRT to get hot and/or have this smell.  Any thoughts?  Is this a sign the monitor is going "poof"?

On the other hand, any recommendations for a small, quiet, plug-in fan I can use to cool it off?

CRTs do put off a fair amount of heat and can certainly smell, particularly if they're older and dusty.

That being said, even if it burns out, I bet you can find another 15" monitor for free somewhere.  I've got a couple in my basement because it's a pita to dispose of them and nobody's really interested in them anymore.

15" monitors are like hamsters.. once they begin to smell you just toss em and get another.  :)
