Title: What am I doing wrong!
Post by: gars943 on March 19, 2006, 10:51:14 am
I gave up trying to compile analog+ onto my .73b MAME for multiple trackballs, I just can't figure it out.  I even tried Mr.Do!'s version of compiling to get ver.104u5, and ended up with  errors in the "patchmame" which is the step before compiling MAME, let alone MAME32.  So now I find the whole package of ver.104u6 complete at "MAME 32QA" but when I go by the instructions and load the roms I get nothing.
I should mention I have a Dell Dimension DE051, Intel Celeron 2.53GHz with 1GB RAM running on XP.  My current version of MAME is 73b.
What do I need to do to get the complete package of ver.104u6 to work?
Thank-in advance, gars943

You state when you load the ROMs you get nothing...really?  Nothing on screen at all, not even error messages?

After initially loading one or two roms, no I did not get any screen.  I then transfered my .73b files to the 104u6 files now all I get is the following errors Centiped is the example:

centiped.207 NOT FOUND
centiped.208 NOT FOUND
centiped.209 NOT FOUND
centiped.210 NOT FOUND
centiped.211 NOT FOUND
centiped.212 NOT FOUND
136001.213   NOT FOUND
I've tried several games that I know work in 73b, but do not work in 104u6, and I get the above type errors.  Is there another step to initiating the 104u6 that I'm missing?

Update your ROMsets.

peale is right about the romset thing though.

No 104u6 is the current version...

You update your roms by going to one of the mame burners and buying a new set. Once you have a current set you only then have to buy the update disk each time to keep it current.

You can also use Romcenter, or clrmame to help fix up some of the roms that you have and then you just need to locate the ones that arent working still (Romcenter will tell you which ones they are too)

You probably DONT want to mention this method in answer to the question.  Either the thread will get sent to Post Hell or your reply will.  Talking about acquiring roms in that manner generally won't fly.

Not the case.... I didn't post any links to where to get them from... nor would I do that. It's up to him to search for himself to find them.

It may be a grey area.  Saint's rules say:

Quote
5. Nothing illegal! Do I even need to explain this one? Need a ROM to repair an arcade board you own? Fine to talk about. Need a ROM to complete your MAME collection? Don't bother to post here. If someone posts such a request, please don't answer it -- no direct answers, no hints, no private messages.

Buying a new set technically isnt legal though so thats why I made my comment.  If the mods don't have an issue with your answer, then I dont either.  Just trying to be safe than sorry.   ;D

I'll only say this...

Quite likely he *doesn't* need to REQUEST a new set (you don't buy them, you request them), he just needs to have a ROM manager (like ClrMAME) do the renaming for him.  There will be additions and changes, but those are usually few and far between.

To Peale,Flinkly,Fozzy the Bear,Antix, and Hoopz,
Thanks for helping the new kid out. Without saying how, I will keep it simple and then just keep it updated.  I'll probably be back when I can't figure out how to make the multiple trackballs work. by the way is it in "Properties" or "Dip Switches?

                                                Thanks,

I'mmmm back!  Knew it wouldn't be long.  Okay once again- I updated both MAME to v104u6, and roms to v104.  I still have v73b installed, I'm on a dell computer with Intel Celeron 2.53 GHz, 1GB RAM, XP, using the Optipac and Ipac boards, and this is what happens: I go from "game menu" to a black screen for about a second then back to the "game menu" the actual game will not start.  What steps do I have to take to get the games up and running?

Still sounds like bad ROMS to me.  Try running ClrMAME Pro or RomCenter to make sure your romsets will work with the new version.

Also, make sure MAME32 knows where your new roms are and is showing the games as available.

ClrMame instructions here: http://www.mameworld.net/easyemu/clrmameguide.htm

First, don't run the game from a front end.  Do it right from the command line, so if there are any errors, they should be on screen so you can troubleshoot.

From the initial post, I got the impression he was using MAME32, not a frontend, but I think he still needs to tell MAME32 his Rom directories before it will launch games.  Also - you might want to filter available games in MAME32 and see if at least those work.

Ah, good point.  Drop Mame32, get regular vanilla Mame.

btw, there is a now very mature technology that is VERY useful when you want to share files to many people, but can't supply the bandwidth yourself.  BitTorrents are GREAT.  Everyone who wants to download the files are also uploading to other people.

Its amazing how useful it is for many many different tasks.  For downloading demos of games when the company sites are down.  Or posting your own work or home images or home movies or whatever.

The trouble is finding the torrent files which set everything up and allow you to download them.  Google can sometimes find some.  So if your looking for torrents on home movies... you can type just that "bit torrent home movies" and you will probably find some.

But bit torrent is your friend...  Not as fast as finding a perfessional site that you can just download... but for many its a good alternative that allows you to share some of your bandwidth at the same time.
