Title: Looking for (free) file-comparison util to clear out duplicate files
Post by: quarterback on March 18, 2006, 04:50:28 pm
I use a program called "beyond compare" for synchronizining my laptop to my desktop.  It has the ability to do a binary compare of differently titled files and determine if they're actually the same file, but it's not really built to do that en masse and I have a ton of files in my Email attachment mailbox that are just the same file over and over again.

Does anybody know ofa good program to help me go through the 3,000+ files and clean up all the dupes?

Your Cygwin-fu is weak quarterback. If you had that installed you could easily write a mega-diff script and leave it running overnight to find the duplicates.   ;D

You are correct sensei, my non-windows-fu (in general) is pretty weak at this point.  I'm not even sure I remember DOS commands, much less anything in the unix vein.

But there HAS to be some small, basic program to do this for me.  I've found a couple big software "suites" that say they'll help clear out duplicate files, but I'm not looking for a spyware/duplicate finder/program uninstaller/etc behemoth.     Unless anybody has any suggestions, I guess I'll just do a trial and error run at some of these shareware programs.  :'(
