I just got this board yesterday. When I play it, the mission screen (where it tells you about President Ronnie), the 1st stage background, the water in the 3rd stage, etc. are all garbled. I checked my voltages at the jamma connecter. At +5 its 4.98, at the -5 its -4.99, so voltages are not the problem. Does anyone know which rom chip I can look at to see if it isn't set properly? I'm not sure which one is responsible for backgrounds. Any ideas?

Did you run a self-test?
Reseat all chips?
The voltage seems a litle bit low. You can usually go as high as 5.2. See if that helps.
-
How do you run a self test on it??
I did pull all the chips, and filed their legs gently with a nail file. After that I reseated them. No change.
I'll try going up to 5.2 volts and see if that does anything.
-
Upping the voltage did nothing. :( The 12 volt lead is running at about 13 volts. Could that cause the problem?
-
no,your voltages are correct.Unfortunatly i think you have a graphics ic fault,is it a single board or has it two layers?

It has two layers.
-
Put the voltage back down closer to 5.0 now.
OK, look for broken traces, bloated capacitors, broken legs on part...
-
this could be a classic dry joint issue, its gonna be difficult to prove-first reseat your boards and check for any spillage on the connectors or tracks
-
Have you tried cleaning the edge board connector? This sometimes works too. Have you tries another jamma board just ot make sure that you dont have a power issue?
-
this is very similar to a fault i had with a daytona, all you need is one bad joint on an IC and you get all sorts of graphic problems, usually its with the surface mount chips and its very difficult to prove.

Could I use a computer power supply to test the board? This would let me know if my power supply is bad, right?

its not a psu fault

its not a psu fault
Agreed.
Where did you measure the voltage from? Directly from the PS, or from the JAMMA, or from the PCB?
Best place to measure voltage on-board is on an empty socket. In the corners. Just make DAMN sure not to bridge anything when you do!
-
I measured the voltage from the edge connector of the board, right below the JAMMA connector.
Do I pull a chip to measure? And which corners do I choose?

Measuring where you did is fine (under the connector).
No, don't pull a chip to measure. If there's an empty socket, measure from corner to OPPOSITE corner. If you get a weird reading, switch corners.
If you're VERY CAREFUL you can measure on a chip, if all the sockets are full. Just don't bridge the pins, or you're not going to be happy.
However, since you measured 5V @ the JAMMA, I'm sure that's fine.

So what should my next step be in troubleshooting this?
-
You may have a bad ROM. You say 1st stage background is garbled, but how's the second stage?
-
1st stage background is garbled, second stage background is ok, third stage is ok except for the sewer, forest stage (4th) is ok, underground stage (5th) is garbled, train stage (6th) is ok, 7th stage is garbled.
-
Check out the ROMs. Check to make sure no legs are broken off. Check the solder side to see if any joints have broken.
-
Will do :-\
-
I have checked everything... looked for broken rom legs, looked for broken traces, loose solder joints. I've come up with nothing. Any other ideas?
-
Ditch the board and buy a good game instead.
;D
-
I'm afraid its off to your local repair centre for that board, better off getting a different board like RayB says

;D
But it's one of my favorites... :'(
-
Wow. OK. Im sorry for saying that. :D
-
Well, good news... the ebay seller is taking it back, and sending me another Bad Dudes :applaud:
Hopefully this one will work right, lol.
-
lucky you. :applaud:
yeah, good luck with the next one. ;)
-
Finally got the new one in the mail... :) It works! Time to save President Ronny and get a cheezburger! wOOt!
