Title: PS3 to have Linux pre-loaded on HDD!

Dang, that's awesome, because it hopefully means that homebrew applications will be super easy to run on the system. Can you imagine running a PS3 port of Mame at full speed on PS3? That would be totally sweet!

I'm betting it wont be as easy as youd think.  But then again, they might be relying on the security of the Blu-ray itself to stop piracy.

If the discs are secure enough, then homebrew software shouldn't pose a very big piracy threat.

Wasn't the same said about the PS2?

Which will be enough to stop people ripping them until blu-ray drives get cheaper

They wont be.. Sony, which i hate to say, is smart enough to keep discs simple.. itll only be a matter of time til people rip the discs, and bring them down to basic dual layer discs... if not normal DVD-+Rs

Remember that It will be able to read regular cds and dvds....

so Blu Ray technology wouldnt really have anything to do with stopping it.

If the games are bigger than 9 gigabytes then it wouldn't fit on anything but a Blu-Ray disc.

If there bigger than 9 gigs and CANT be cut down via compressing video or cutting it out..

Well, that would require a lot of hacking and modifying of the actual game ISOs, and ontop of that FMVs will be a lot less common with PS3 games.

Sony would not be including Linux if it posed a seriouse threat of undermining their disc security measures. It's inevitable that the games will eventually be pirated, but as to how much allowing homebrew software would contribute to that, I do not know.

Joystiq has better coverage of the conference.  Yep, bluray is mainly there to help prevent piracy (since the burning hardware isn't affordable yet).

All playstations have run on linux, I believe.  The question is why is linux on the harddrive?  If you unplug the hard drive will it not boot?

Right now games hardly get bigger than 5gig.

Sony is going to use Gamespy??

For the homebrew stuff on the PS2 don;t you need a mod chip?  Since the PS2 is emulated on  he PS3...

All you have to do is look at the PSP to see Sony's attitude toward home brew. They're going to do everything they can to prevent you from using their machine to do anything but play their $60 games, Linux or not.

That never seemed to be a problem with DC or Xbox games. Ripping and re-encoding is common place for fitting larger games down to smaller media.

That is like saying...

Sony wouldn't put games on standard CD, if it posed a threat of undermining their security measures. (PSX)

or

Sony wouldn't put games on standard DVD, if it posed a threat of undermining their security measures. (PS2)

or

Sony wouldn't release a HDD, if it posed a threat of undermining their security measures. (Also PS2)

Well...

Doh!

:P

Sony announced that all PS3 games will be on BD-Rom disks, regardless of size

So did I.  It was an Atari 2600.  Then it was an NES.  Then a Super NES.  Then an N64.  then a Playstation.  Then a Dreamcast.  Then a Gamecube.  Then an Xbox.

Maybe I don't get your point.

Linux on a PS3?  Homebrew?

Yeah, Sony is sooooooooooooo supportive of homebrew on the PSP.  $ony wil figure out a way to neuter linux so that you can't do anything other than what they intend for you to do.

It will take a lot longer than a week just to get the encrypted BIOS off the chip, then longer than a week to decrypt the BIOS... and then longer than a week to reverse engineer the bios and longer than a week to change it, longer than a week to test it, longer than a week to have a replacement chip made.

These things are more complex than people think.  It appears many users have no idea how many hundreds of manhours go into just the beginning stages of this stuff.

That's what SEGA thought when they released the Dreamcast... Lets make a format that nobody can copy...  Yeah! Right!  :laugh2:
