As far as I know, MAME can not use the mouse buttons as input, therefore, unless you're messing around in windows with a trackball, they won't be of use. So, I'd like to have them out of the way.
In my old cab, I put then on the side of the control panel box, so I could hang my hand over the edge of the top to click them. It was nice because it kept the top uncluttered, but it sucked if you needed to hold down shift and click. So now I'm thinking about putting on top of my new box.
Thoughts? Am I being a little TOO picky? :)

You can wire them so that they duplicate the first 3 buttons for player 1 & act as mouse buttons. I heard this suggested before, but I wonder about the key presses showing up in windows then.

I use button1 and button2 of my mouse for inputs. Mame doesn't support 3 mouse buttons though.
GAME ON!

Yep, MAME can use mouse buttons as inputs. I have my left button mounted to the left of and slightly below my trackball, and my right button mounted to the right of and slightly above. That way, the left button is conveniently under my thumb while operating the trackball (useful for Tron) while the right one is out of the way except when I need it.

MAME uses mouse buttons just fine. I have mine wired up to the upper left of my trackball, works just fine for surfing through menus, etc...
-
I mounted mine within thumbs reach of the trackball
just below it. I have a little problem with my buttons
I am using an optipac and have my mouse buttons connected to it. They work fine for normal operations but I can't click and drag ,or drag a scroll bar down or highlight text in wordpad . anyone else have this problem?

Mame accepts my mouse for movement, but won't recognize the buttons.

There are settings in windows that allow you to use the keyboard for mouse input (using cursor keys, etc.) Don't remember where it is, in the control panel somewhere. Look it up in the Windows help! It's there to help you (kind of...)

I have my trackball buttons directly below and to the left of my trackball, so they're in easy reach while browsing the net or playing half life. It's good to curve them around the bottom left of the trackball, so you can reach all the buttons, and make one button the easiest to reach, so it's like your left mouse button.

I'm going o have player one buttons 1 through 3 be mouse buttons. A switch under the control panel switches them from joystick buttons, to mouse buttons.

I had to down load a HUGE mouse driver so I could change the setings for three button crystal track ball. now I can play missel comand with three buttons . it was a windows isue not mame

Does MAME still support mouse buttons? I doesn't seem to work for me & I thought I remember reading that the support was dropped.

I'm beginning to think it is a MAME version issue. Last night I tried using the mouse buttons as MAME input, and it worked. I swear I wasn't able to do that before...
I'm currently using MAME32 v0.59. I swear it didn't work in 0.56 though...

Well I AM using .59. I have 'enable mouse input' checked. I tried this on 3 different machines. Perhaps there's another setting that I'm missing?

I use mouse buttons all the time in windows mame.
Just make sure mouse 1 is in your ini file.
Have to use mouse buttons in a game like dotron.

Nevermind...forgot to actually change the mapped controls. For some reason I thought that they'd automatically default to the mouse buttons. ;D
