Title: Oh my god, just tried ZINC.....
Post by: AE35 on March 13, 2006, 12:43:23 pm
Oh my god, how can I go back to MAME??

I just tried some of the 3D fighters on zinc...it's amazing how good they
look. Running the same game on mame looks horrible, simply horrible. Not
just the speed, but the graphics..oh man. Really bad.

Isn't there something we can do? Is there an emulator that emulates a lot
of games, like mame, but with the quality of zinc?

MAME is about accuracy, not about speed or eye candy.

Yep.  It's called the Dreamcast.  It's phenomenal!

There are mame builds that uses Zinc Plug'in for rendering. The visual result is the same on mame.

Aubdocmame does that   and lot of more...  But it is only in french and advanced realease are reserved to certain member of a french forum.

But i know other builds does that. don't remember names.

"There are mame builds that uses Zinc Plug'in for rendering"

I would really like that!!  any links or more information?

But even though MAME isn't about eye candy, why doesn't it look better??

(yes, I have two DC's, but I don't want to change CD's to change games:))

btw, those builds piss off the mame devs and the plugin devs (all at once)

And the ones I've seen only worked with the zinc games (or are there new ones??).

Zinc is great and very inaccurate.  But on my cab... I ONLY run Zinc for those games!   I love all those inaccurate graphics with fsaa and all!

Gameex frontend has a the ability to auto use zinc for games it supports, and mame for games it doesn't.

epsxe has been my favorite lately. Soul Blade is better than the zinc version, even.

This is how the original arcade game looked.  MAME is not about changing games (even to make them "better").  MAME is about playing these games just as they were in arcades, warts and all.

Isn't there something we can do?
Sure.  You can appreciate games for what they were, or you can ignore the playability and concentrate only on eye candy like the rest of the world which currently salivates over their XBox 360's and ---smurfy--- games.

Likewise, most of the games that ZiNc emulates had near perfect ports on Playstation (which will also work on a PS2).  You can pick these up off eBay for $10 a pop these days.

The name "ZiNc" comes from the sony ZN hardware, which used the R3000A processor used in Sony's ZN1 and ZN2, Namco's System11 and System12, as well as the Sony Playstation home console.  Hence why the home console versions were so good.

Many good ports also made it to Sega's Dreamcast as well at the time.

As AtomicFE does , and all frontends could , i think. If the FE does seems not provide this features, it is always doable using a .BAT file or a .VBS.

Actually most people out there use my command line wrapper.  It's pre configured for zinc.

I have no idea what a command line wrapper is ;D

Think of it as a reverse front end; where the graphical program is assisted/controled by a Command Line Interface instead of a Graphical User Interface.  Pretty much...

Interesting. I've never really felt the need to use anything other than MAME but I'm slowly getting into 3D fighters so perhaps I'll give ZINC a go.

Does anyone know whether ZINC and MAME share the same ROM files?

Most of the time they can.  The easiest thing to do is use ClrMAMEPro with an up to date ZiNc .dat file, and use your MAME ROMs as a base to build the correct ZiNc ROMs.

I've really gotten away from zinc myself. My pc is a semperon 64 3400, so it runs the zinc games in mame at around full fps.  When zinc supported more zn based games than mame I used it, but now mame supports far more zn games than zinc does.

Zinc is great when they update it... the problem is that happens maybe once every two years.
