Title: spinner question (tempest)
Post by: ssc arcade on March 10, 2006, 09:34:58 am
I made a HDD bearing spinner mounted to a mouse.  Works good but on tempest (only game I have tried so far) it spins backwards.

I spin clockwise game spins counter clockwise.

Any settings to correct this, I have the mouse set up just as it was.

I suppose if you think about it, I am missing the ball reverse.

mouse move one way, ball rotates opposite, wheel spins correct.

Anyway any ideas?

You can reverse the controls in MAME.

Launch Tempest, then TAB, Analog Controls, Dial Reverse.

I would just reverse the two sensor wires.
While you can reverse the axis in MAME, that won't help other games.

Pics would help, and depends how you hacked the mouse, but you should just need to trace the wires from the two outer legs of the receiver/detector back to the mouse PCB, desolder them, reverse them, and solder them back on.

thanks again, I will give it a try, it has the mini header plug so I will probably just see if I can trace the wires back to the plug and reverse the wires at the header instead of messing with solder.

Not the prettiest spinner, I may try and post some pics later.  I basically followed the write ups for the HDD based spinners.  One item I found out is that hot glue can be your friend.  I will see if it holds up but it made it much easier to get the mouse wheel rod to the HDD bottom and the mouse body cut in half with PCB attached to bracket.  It will allow you to remove and adjust without much problem.

I included a pic of the top side just for the heck of it.  (yes I went with the quik bunny spinner)

Nice CP.  My spinner was based on the Cheep Spinner design, so that's the kind of hack I was envisioning in my response...
