I'm wondering if anyone can tell me their experiences with applying adhesive backed control panel overlays to MDF. Do they stick well?
I'm asking because I'm considering whether I should just stick the overlay to the cp or sandwich it between the wood and some Lexan.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Steve
btw, the overlay is from mamemarquees.com if it makes a diff...

If you prime the mdf, that will go a long way. I also used super77 spray adhesive for added stickiness. Did you read the paperwork that came with it?

I always use a layer of Lexan or Clear PVC type material over the top. Even though you don't have to do it, it does protect the artwork and the finish. If you spent money on this CP overlay, why wear it out when you can replace the lexan in a few years time.

I used a white oil-based primer ( two coats) and let it dry for a week before applying the graphic overlay. It has not lifted at all. I also use the T-Molding that has the lip that graps wraps around the edge and slightly over the edge of the plexi-glass. It makes for a very nice finish.

Wouldn't it be just about impossible to wear the overlay out? I mean if it comes from mamemarquees that is. Scott's stuff is bulletproof. Superman gets his suits made there.

Thanks for the opinions, guys. I was originally going to use the Lexan. When I received the overlay, I was so impressed by the quality and texture I started thinking that it would be nice to have it exposed. Once again, I appreciate the comments. The jury is out for now.

Disclaimer: mccoy178 in no way condones the use of an overlay purchased from mamemarquees as a bullet proof vest. mccoy178 does think that it would be good to hide under during inclement weather such as hurricanes or tornados.

Can someone comment on how thick/rigid the material mamemarquees uses is? I am a little unhappy with the recessing job I did for my trackball mounting plate, and the vinyl CP overlay I have now really shows the imperfections. It has also slightly wrinkled in spots. If it were a little bit more rigid I think it would be perfect.

If it's not even, the overlay will show it. Mine isn't even, I have a mamemarquees overlay, it does a good job of hiding the imperfections, and the only one that really says anything about it is me. Others could care less, they just want to play.

It will show almost any indentations.

Damn, was hoping it was thicker than the vinyl or shelf lining stuff. Are there any other options out there such as attaching the artwork to a very thin but slightly rigid sheet of plastic or something?
