The unused yellow wire of "unknown use" is the one that people have been using to retrofit a power button for the system itself onto the controller, if I remember correctly. I've been blessed with a healthy 1st-gen Xbox, so I've been reluctant to perform any such mods myself.
Another site with good info for making a combo plug is:

With that method, you make the breakaway cable dual-purpose, eliminating the need to hunt down ends when taking it from the PC to your Xbox.

Thanks for the quick replies. Anyone one have a link to the Linux Drivers? Can you use 2 at the same time?

A simple Xbox memory Hack I did if you don't even want to screw around with your controllers. Good for keyboards and such;

:oOh, now that's just cool! Time to scour the used section at the local stores.
Any idea if the Live headset pucks and/or speakers have the same type of wiring harness in them? If I'm doing this on the cheap, I'd like to know what my options are.

So can I use 2 joysticks at once. ??? I just need to know before I buy the joysticks since i'm planning on building 3 bartops.

Your joystick is basically a 3 port USB hub, the controller takes up one "port" and the two memory ports use the other two. So in theory anything that connects to them has to use the same scheme to connect to it.

Thanks for the heads up. I knew that the controllers were basically USB, but I had no idea about the periphrial ports.
