Title: question about thickness of the wood for control panel...
Post by: bossyman15 on March 07, 2006, 06:01:31 pm
i'm going to start building my 4 player control panel soon. (finally!)

anyway i want to use 5/8 inch MDF for top panel but it would be about 48"x18" plus i will route 1/8 off some of top for flight stick and trackball mount to be flush with top panel and put glass cover on top. will the wood be strong enought to support the weight of controls and people's hands on center of wood?

It should.  I have added support braces in front of and behind the trackball in two panels I made of 5/8ths mdf.  I knew that it was going to get a good pounding from Golden Tee and it worked perfectly.  Otherwise, I think it would be just fine unless someone karate chops it.  Thats been known to happen. :-X

About 1/3 of the way down, you'll see the inside of a speaker box that has been heavily braced.
