Title: home-made candy cab?
Post by: infiniteomega on March 06, 2006, 05:19:30 pm
Just a quick question to throw out there.  Has anyone ever heard of someone building their own Japanese candy cab style cabinet before?  Not necessarily out of metal and plastic like the ones we see all the time, but with the general size/shape.

Only reason why I ask is because I personally like the Japanese cabs better than American ones, but I'd rather not shell out the kind of cash they command so I'd have to build my own.    I'm toying with the idea of making a woody candy cab, or perhaps a sort of tekken 5 cab ripoff in the near future.

what do you mean by candy cab?  it half sounds like you're talking about a particular style of arcade cabinet, and half sounds like you're talking about a candy vending machine.

Have any pics?  That would help.  Sorry I'm not up on my cabinet lingo.

Look in the B/S/T forum for a thread called "Any Interest in Candy Cabs?"

There are some examples of several different candy cabs in that.

I've been thinking about building a candy cab for a little while. I don't know if it would be worth it money wise but it would be a fun little project for "someday".

Time to bust out the fiberglass, eh?

This is probably the cab I have seen that is the most similar in shape/size to a candy cab.

That is a great idea to make a candy cab out of wood! Australia too has these cabs, overpriced naturally. Heres a couple of examples of the candy cabs:

I've never seen that cabinet before.  Not my style but very cool.  It's looks well designed.  I'd love to see a finished picture with paint and art.

Wow, that one guy's cab is really cool, and looks good despite it having no paint/laminate/artwork/etc.  I totally don't have the skill to do all those curves.  I hadn't even entertained the thought of fiberglass either...and I won't.  That's just way too involved for me...especially for a first project.   I do like how he kept it open underneath, makes it easy to get close, and put your feet underneath it.  Something I'll keep in mind.

As I said, my other thought was a tekken5 cab knockoff.  I think they had a pic of it on klov.  It used the least material.  Metal lets, a trapezoidal box to hold the pcb with the coin box attached to the front, and a control panel attached underneath the monitor.  It's very...skeletal, and I like that.

I also know a guy who knows a guy (wow) who runs his own arcade so I might be able to score something that's already made.  So who knows.
