Title: Xbox 360 and disposable income
Post by: vader on March 04, 2006, 02:30:34 pm
I have about 600 bucks to play around with and was going to get a 360.  Is it worth all the hype right now ?  Is the graphics and gameplay revolutionary.  The only thing I've ever saw was the Call of Duty 2 demos and of course their going to make that look good.  Some info advice appreciated.  BTW...have a friend who is selling his premium setup, never used.

XBox 360 Premium          400.00
Extra BT Controller            50.00
Tiger Woods 06                 60.00
NBA 06                               60.00
                                        __________
                                           570.00

in my opinon waiting till the ps3 (spring 06 i think) and the price of the 360 should be less.  also check out ghost recon advanced warfighter looks good (ign.com).

it depends on if they have any games that you want to play.  like for me im waiting till halo 3 to buy a 360 so in like 2 years.  but i doubt you want to wait that long.

also if its one of the first few sold it may be defective (psu) so that would be my main concern otherwise sounds like a good deal.

In my opinion the graphics and gameplay aren't revolutionary.  The graphics look nice and pretty and the gameplay is fun.  If I had a spare $600 lying around and didn't have a 360 I would probably purchase one.  So far the games I really enjoy are Call of Duty 2, Project Gotham Racing 3, Dead or Alive 4, and Condemned: Criminal Origins.  If you have a broadband connection then I would say definitely get a 360.  Once you have the system all set up immediately sign into Xbox Live and download the game Geometry Wars.  Geometry Wars is my favorite game on the 360 and it was only about $7.

Do have the money laying around and the hi def tv of course.  The main reason I'm considering is I do really enjoy Tiger Woods, even though it's far from a premiere game.  I could definitely wait if need be, but from of the cost productions problems I'm reading about from Sony, the PS3 could be pushed into '07 for the states.

Decisions.

If I remember the reviews correctly, the 360 version is actually worse then the xbox and ps2 versions because they removed a bunch of courses and game modes, but it is prettier to look at :)

I've never been an XBox fan, so I'm waiting for the PS3 and Nintendo's next console (did they ever give it a name?  Revolution was its code name not its real name)

I can't understand people who buy 360s in the expectation that better games will appear in the future. What's the point in having a console just sitting on a shelf depreciating in value? Why not wait till the games have actually appeared before making the purchase at which point the 360 will have dropped in price?

Better still why not wait to see whether the PS3 is any good?

Early adopters always get a raw deal.

ps2 was the same way, xbox was the same way, consoles now generally have 1 or 2 launch titles and everything else is crap.. then later great games come out..

Some people like having it now, playing the stuff thats out now..

Again, LOL at waiting until PS3..

oh, and might I add that there's a PC version of Geometry Wars 2 called GridWars: http://www.incitti.com/Blitz/

Anyway, if you're enjoying games on systems you already own now, I would wait a little if I were you.
I dunno if they rent out 360 systems in the US, but that would be a good way to test the water...

Here's what I have noticed with my 360.  First, don't get those games right away.  Rent them and see if you like or get a demo from Live Marketplace.
EA rushed the sports titles for launch.  I haven't liked any of them, will wait for 07 versions.  Plus EA decided to not release NHL06 in order to work on 07.

The only game I have now is Perfect Dark Zero.  Love it, I think it is awesome.  Always been a fan of goldeneye and perfect dark on the n64.

I plan on Getting NFS Most Wanted, Condemmed, Kameo, COD2, and King Kong, but in a few months when they are cheap on ebay.  I don't like playing $60 for game and I am willing to wait to get them cheaper.

I like the Fight Night demo, that's a tempting game to get.

However, I might buy Ghost Recon this week.  The other soon to come games I will look into getting are Blazing Angels, Burnout Revenge, Dead Rising, and Elder Scrolls Obvlivion.

As for the arcade games.  I have Geometry Wars and Marble Blast.  Geometry Wars is pretty cool.  Marble Blast will get old once you have done all the levels, but it does have decent multiplayer to keep it going.

As for revolutionary gameplay and graphics...  Gameplay: right now it's mostly sport titles, arcade racing, anf FPS.  Nothing really new or unique.  Kameo is a platformer and is prtty good.  I've been playing Condemmed at a friend's place, it's a pretty scary game.  Graaphics: They are good.  You do have to realize that these are launch titles right now.  No launch title has ever taken full advantage of the system (just compare super mario bros 1 ro 3 :) ),  The King Kong looks awesome.  Fight Night is beautiful.

I also got the 360 because I am going to phase out playing games on the PC.  Too expensive to keep up.  And I wanted something that had awesome networking capabilities.  Yep, Sony is suppose to come out with a "Live killer" network with the PS3.  Honestly, Microsoft has had several years of real life testing and bug fixing for the Live system with the original xbox, do you think Sony can be better on the first shot?  As a programmer I can tell you if another company has a 4 year head start it is a huge uphill climb to make something better.

I also am thinking about getting the Revolution too.  It's Nintendo, and if it is going to be as cheap as the rumors say it is going ot be that's a no brainer.

As for price I don't see the system dropping in price for at least another year.  And I don't see the PS3 being cheaper than the 360.  You do realize these are very powerful machines.  You couldn't build a PC as good as them for twice as much as they cost.

If I sound like I am negative towards the PS3 I am not.  It will be a good system.  The fact that it will be backwards compatible is going to be a strong selling point.

I plan on getting a PS2 after the PS3 comes out.  I've been wanting to play katamri and some other games.  Also a friend of mine tried out HD Loader this weekend.  Pretty cool to legally, without a modchip, play games off the hard drive.

Ok, well I passed on the 360 because as luck would have it, my brother bought one first and I can just head over to his place to play ( a few miles away ).  I went and
bought TW '06 and while the graphics are indeed " prettier ", the gameplay isn't as fluid as either the the xbox or ps2 and a crapload of courses are missing.  NBA 2k6 is a riot though.

They did the same thing to madden, took out a bunch of features.  That's why many people are waiting for the 07 titles to come out.  Go trade TW06 in for Fight Night :)

360 is only good for one thing... Elder scrolls IV OBLIVION!,  its comming out the 20th!!!!!! or if you dont wanna waste your money on a 360 because the games are pretty $%*tty  you could just go buy the PC version and upgrade your computer!... hmm im guessing 200-400$ depending on how crappy your computer is and get an Super-Uber Computer and the game for 10$ LESS!

Xbox 360 may not be a revolution, but oblivion is!

$600 could get you laid.

Twice.

Or get you a candy cab.  And the cab would probably give you more long term enjoyment than both the 360 and getting laid.   :P
