Title: Somebody set me straight, please...
Post by: sittingduck on February 28, 2006, 10:03:03 am
I'm running Mame with an ArcadeVGA and a scart tv. And I live in Denmark, which means that my TV natively runs at 50 hz. I'm going to state what I think are facts and the you people can set me straight if I have got this all wrong:

Given that my PAL tv also supports NTSC scan rates - 60 hz - then it makes no sense to choose refresh rates that aren't either 50 or 60 hz because the tv doesn't support this and games wouldn't run perfectly smooth (I know running at a non native rate would influence the speed of the game, however). To be able to utilize scan rates that are a little off 60 hz, one would need a multisync monitor and not a tv.

Or is a tv kind of multisync, say between 50 and 60 hz?

Maybe you need to provide a bit more information ... you say you have a tv, avga and mame... Have you tried it yet? Is it not displaying correctly?

Don't confuse the refresh rate (50-60hz) with the horizontal sync rate (or whatever it's called). Arcade monitors run at 15khz and multisync monitors are typically 31khz

Thanks for trying to help.
Yes, my AVGA is running fine, but that's beside the point because what I'm looking to do is replace it with a regular gfx card and then use Powerstrip to create resolutions. That's why I'm asking.

I guess what I'd like to know is if a tv that supports both 50 and 60 hz also will support rates inbetween, eg. 53 hz If I wanted to do that. Or is it absolutely "hard-locked" to only show either 50 or 60 frames per second. This is using the scart port, by the way.

It probably supports a range.... But I can't say for sure.

Hi Sittingduck.
I'm from Spain and here all the TV's I know runs at 50-60Hz.
I've a 14" Tv without a top mark....(firstline) connected through Scart-rgb and running Advmame with and old AVGA (7000 based).
Don't worry about, there's a solution for a 53Hz scan frequency for Irem and Midway games.
Try to use Advmame (winXp using the svgawin.exe driver) or a better way, try to use Advmame dos version.
In my advmame config, the program chooses the better resolution and frequency automatically.

The powerstrip is another solution.
