Title: LED connector question - re: Oscar's Page
Post by: chris_lemasters on February 25, 2006, 10:39:57 pm
All,

Just looking at Oscar's nice LED page:
http://www.oscarcontrols.com/led/index.shtml (http://www.oscarcontrols.com/led/index.shtml)
and wondering what are the nifty little brown connectors that he uses to connect the LEDs to the wires?  (see the picture towards the bottom of the page showing two buttons wired up http://www.oscarcontrols.com/led/leds2.jpg (http://www.oscarcontrols.com/led/leds2.jpg)).  Anyone know?  Looks like they might clean up the whole wiring effort.

Thanks!!!

Chris

Those are .100 spacing 2-pin connectors like the ones used to connect a PC case to the pins on the motherboard.  A CD-ROM 4-pin cable that connects the analog audio out to the sound card would be a similar cable.

You can buy the connectors, pins, and wire, but putting them together is a PITA.  If anyone has a good source for these connectors with bare wires sticking out (probably at least 12"), then please let me know as I would also like to buy some.

They are a 2-pin "molex" type connector.  Quite a nifty idea.

You should be able to use any 2-pin push-on type connector as long as the pin size they are designed for is small enough.  If it says the connector will accomodate a pin size of .020 to .030" you should be ok.

Thanks guys!  I've been meaning to hook up these LEDs for quite a while now.
Off to Frys to check out the selection.

1Up for both of you

I've sourced those connectors with wires already attached by robbing them from junk PC cases.  386, 486, Pentium, you know, junk.

I use those connectors on all my projects, but I just have collected them over the years from dead computers too.  The cool thing is that you can easily remove and replace the pins from the connectors with a small screwdriver which lets you change the colors around.  I'd like to know a good source to buy the pins and connectors.
