Title: Mame vs Mame32
Post by: jimw on February 23, 2006, 05:31:39 pm
ok I know this issue has been talked about before. I understand that Mame32 is the same as Mame it just has a user /GUI interface built in which it turn as gui's do it makes things easier. Without being beaten for asking this question here goes. If Mame32 is easier to use why or what advantages does mame + a frontend offer a user that would make them choose not to use mame32? The frontend is your gui interface for mame right?

Yep, I use Mame32 on my desktop but mame (win32) on my cab with Mamewah. Why anyone would use Mame32 in a cab is a complete mystery to me. Just navigating, especially with no trackball would be a pain the backside.

I used mame 32 on my cab and you cant detect it at all.
When you launch mame32 via mamewah as a command line, you do NOT see the GUI at all. It IS the same as regular MAME

Not exactly ,it consumes more memory. it can make a difference on low powered computers.

If you want use another front end it always better to use MAME not MAME32 , even if it works with MAME32.

Thanks Youki. I knew there had to be a reason  :-)

again this I believe is pure myth.
HOW much memory difference are we talking about here.. because I did a few tests last night and the difference between the two apps running the SAME game was hardly noticable

That 's clear , the difference is not very noticeable.

On older version of mame (0.7x) when i 've tested fes time ago the difference was few hundreds of Kb .

That is not a big problem for most of time.  But  if you running on very low power PC. (lot of my user recycle their very old PC , to run old classic like donkey kong , pacman.. etc)..  when you have only 32 mega of ram. These few Kb can make a difference.  At few Kb you can pass the limit where Windows 98 is beginning to swap memory to HD and slow down dractiscally your performance...

But that sure, you're totally right , in most of the case it doesn't make difference.

no mystery, people like me are just too scared to use anything more complicated! mame32 IS navigable on a cab. that is, you can scroll up and down and select a game with your joystick and buttons. when i built my cab a couple of years ago, thats all i could figure out how to work. probably still all i can work out but now i have become aware of some front ends that work with mame32 as is. my next projects will use atomic fe and when i get a chance to i will set that up in my cocktail cab (i live some thousands of kms away from it now  :( )
