Title: MaME ini issues, My controls are all wacky, can you help?
Post by: Timoe on February 22, 2006, 09:43:56 pm
I just broke out and tested a panel that I built some time ago.  I was testing the set up against a lot of different games and of course there were lots of problems.

Maybe you can help me?

My set up is a one player panel consisting of:
Ipac2 hooked up to admin buttons (ESC, F2, Tab, etc) and a right hand joystick
GPwiz-49 hooked up to the 49-way and 7-buttons
Happ Trackball with USB/ps2 Harness
SlikStik Tornado Spinner USB

All four items are using USB connections, I have windows XP professional, MAME .95 and MAMEWAH for a front end.

Here are my issues:
1. Golden Tee - scrolling like CRAZY on the 1player, 2player, 3 player screen when I'm not even touching a control
2. Centipede - 1p flys to the left side of the screen and sticks there, again I'm not even touching a control and when I do touch the TB the guy moves but fights to fly over to the left again.
3.  When I hit the tab key to bring up the settings, when I go to change analog controls, I select the item and then go to spin the track ball or spinner and nothing happens or registers, I have to hit ESC to get it back to "Mouse X axis J-1 X axis"
4.  How do I set it up so that the trackball will scroll through the games lists in Mamewah?

Notes:  The trackball, trackball buttons and spinner all work GREAT in windows and I've gotten them to work great in a game or two, just not globally.  The GPwiz49 and 49way stick function FLAWLESSLY as expected as does the IPAC and everything its connected to.

In my mame.ini I have
joystick   1
mouse    1

Does this have something to do with the "analog dec/analog inc" settings in MAME?

I probably could have solved all these problems 6 months ago when I was more config/software orientated but I got everything working with my simple IPAC only set up and stopped tinkering so now I've reverted to a ini-noob.

thanks for any help.

btw,

I'm thinking of ditching the spinner now that I've discovered Golden Tee.  I've already stubbed a finger on the thing!

Yeah... having joystick and mouse enabled all the time is a problem... you need to have them disabled in mame.ini then depending upon the game, enable only what you need in the particular game.ini

That will work, but it's not the best solution BECAUSE you still need the buttons connected to the GP-Wiz 49 in some of your trackball games.  I know, because I have gone through the same thing (with a similar-looking control panel ;)).  Basically the GP-Wiz 49 and TB are both competing for movement (the joystick is the culprit in trackball games).

Here is what you need to do:

Go to the games you use a trackball with.  Hit TAB.  Go to INPUT (this game).  Move down to Track X Analog and hit ENTER.  Move the trackball left or right so that it reads: Mouse 1 X

IF IT WON'T REGISTER THE TRACKBALL MOVEMENT, then exit MAME and plug in a regular USB mouse.  Using a regular mouse for some reason seems to work better when mapping controls than the trackball.  I know, because I got the same thing setting up my panel and also when beta testing the Optiwiz.  BTW - leave the trackball plugged in too.

Once you have the mouse hooked up, launch MAME again and go back to the controls setup on the games.  Once you have Track X Analog set to:  Mouse 1 X
THEN
Go down to Track X Dec and hit ENTER.  Hit ESCAPE which should set the value to:  NONE
Do this for Track X INC

Go to Track Y Analog and hit ENTER.  Move the mouse Up to set the value to:  Mouse 1 Y
Set the values for Track Y Inc & Dec to NONE like we did above.

Now your trackball game will work exactly like it should.

Ah, thank you very much.  Thats what I thought it was.  I was hoping that I didnt have to adjust the analog controls like (sensitivity, reverse, etc) for each game.

I totally missed the need for the buttons on the GP-Wiz 49.

markvp...

Thats really good info, I'm sure it would help many... I find the controller menu confusing... and sometimes it does not behave as I would expect.

Thats a little rough to have to change the settings for every game that I want to use the trackball in.  Thanks for the tip to use the mouse to get the axis to register though!

Any tips on where I make the change in mamewah to use the trackball to cycle through games?
