Title: Question on Build numbering (MikeQ)
Post by: Tiger-Heli on February 17, 2006, 09:43:34 am
I want to add something about this to the WIKI.

I understand the current schema.

I.e - Assuming MAME stays at version 104, PowerMAME 104 (maybe should have been 104.0.0) was the initial release.  104.0.1 fixes the LED Output problem.  104.0.2 would be another bugfix.  104.1.0 (assume the bugfix column reverts to 0) will have set49 mode support.  104.1.1 would be a bugfix for this build.  104.2.0 might include set49 mode and add dual-mouse support.

Q1 - Assume PowerMAME 104.1 gets releeased, but MAME goes to version 105 before dual-mouse support is added and PowerMAME updates to the MAME 105 core, does the version with dual mouse support and MAME105 become 105.0.0 (but the release notes mention dual mouse support), or does it become 105.2.0 (continuing additions from the 104.1.0 build)???

Q2 - What about the "u" builds.  104u1 incorporates Silver's lightgun fixes.  Will we see a PowerMAME incorporating the u build updates, or only when official builds are released?  (Keep in mind the third u build is often more stable than a new official build of MAME).   If a PowerMAME based on U build is planned, how would it be numbered (104u1.0.0, 104u1.2.0, etc.).

Sorry for the nit-picking questions . . .

My 2 cents, I don't think u builds should be included.  Those are bug testing/development builds.

Also, just curious why I think about it, the drs modes in powermame, does it revert the drs mode back to a default after a game finishes?

I have to agree with the 'main versions only' thing.  I know I don't update to u versions just because there so frequent and it's a real hassle.

That and the coding might become tedious all that much faster :).

Q1 - The version with dual mouse support and MAME105 would be 105.0.0 and would mention all new features added since the previous build 104.1.0.  Really, 104.2.0 doesn't exist until it is released.  Currently I'm working on 104.1.0 and fully expect to get this out before 105.  If 105 gets released before 104.1.0 then I'll still release 104.1.0 and probably follow up quickly with a 105 that is just 104.1.0 with the new 105 base.  The reason to do this would be to solidify changes that were made to the 104 code base.  If some drastic changes occur in 105, I wouldn't want to hold up the 104.1.0 features trying to rework them for 105.

Q2- I wouldn't do u builds unless they fixed a real showstopper bug.

For the record there are some serious changes currently going on in the 104u builds... Aarons tearing things up again ;-). Looks like he has save states in mind though, although he's broken all the current ones....

More than a few... he's tore up the whole startup/shutdown procedure.  I'm waiting for the dust to settle before I start on any of my projects again.
