Title: go on Apple, stick it to the man!
Post by: danny_galaga on February 17, 2006, 02:34:33 am
why not?

"Such scenarios have raised a debate among Apple observers about whether the company should just license its operating system to run on other machines, similar to Microsoft Corp.

But Apple has repeatedly said it will not do that."

why not indeed? they could really stick it to the man! undercut microsoft all the way. the OS is developed anyway and their computers aren't BIG sellers. the OS sure as hell would be! i know i'd buy a copy so long as it undercut microsoft- even by $5

Apple is a hardware company.  Selling their OS separately means they don't make all that money they currently make on the hardware they sell.  For them, there is more money to be made in the premiums they get on their hardware than there is in selling the OS.

Plus, OS X is good and stable because it doesn't have to support every off the shelf part you can buy down at your local CompUSA.  They know what video card is going to be in the box, so they can write drivers just for that.

It already runs solidly on a good chunk of common PC hardware (I had difficulties with my Soundblaster Live card, but I hink 10.4.5 that was released on Tuesday is supposed to fix this).

I would think anyone that wanted to really stick it to the man would just choose Linux and stick it to both men.  ;D

yeah, good point. but i'm still not convinced linux is as easy to set up as my friends tell me, OR that there is enough stuff supported by it. and i'm sure i'm not alone. i'm talking general population as well as me. most people want it in a box ready to go (or pre-installed).

Depends which version of Linux you install, some have made the install procedure very easy.
