The site IS down.  Those of  you who haven't turned off your PC since the other day still have the DNS in your cache.

This is what happens when you don't pay the renewal for your domain:

Domain name: MAMEWORLD.NET

 Administrative Contact:
    C, Mark  roclobsta@mameworld.net
    Mail for details
    Exeter, Devon EX4
    UK

 Technical Contact:
    Williams, Zachary  admin@ztnet.com
    1955 Pauline Blvd
    Suite 300F
    Ann Arbor, MI 48103
    US
    734-222-8112

 Registrar of Record: TUCOWS, INC.
 Record last updated on 14-Feb-2005.
Record expires on 16-Feb-2006.

I expect at some point, he'll pay the renewal fee in the redemption period and it will be back.

For any that need various common support files like the mamewah system files in the interim, I have most of it zipped safely on a DVD and am quite happy to put them back on the PC and email/MSN them to people.

Just chuck me a PM if you're desperate.

Hmm, rocklobsta hasn't been around for a while, maybe they are having trouble getting in touch with him.  I think he'd have to be the one renewing the domain if it's in his name.

Allroy, I tried emailing you the system zip to your gmail account and your server is knocking it back. Do you have a limit on the size file attachments you can receive?. Have also sent to your yahoo account but not had anything come back from there. Let me know if you have received it ok.

Anyone else looking for mamewah support files in the interim you can contact me by pm or on msn (FATTRUCKER_AT_FSMAIL_DOT_NET).

The server is still up.  You can get there this way:

edit your HOSTS file to include this:

64.237.35.239   www.mameworld.net

You can connect.

I've thrown a mirror of mamewah.mameworld.net online -- you can get to it via:

http://mirrors.arcadecontrols.com/mamewah.mameworld.net/

I didn't ask before throwing it online, so if they object it's coming down ...

I'll be danged, that DOES work! :)  Lucky be those who actually run a 'HOSTS' file!

Well...everyone should have one, but not everyone knows it's there.

What's a hosts file and how do I edit it???

Depends on your OS.  In XP it's @:

\windows\system32\drivers\etc\

Just edit it with a text editor.

Nice!  I just noticed Mameworld was down, came here, and found the answer quite fast.  Game On!

Make sure it doesn't get a ".txt" appended to it, and you also don't want the "hosts.sam" file -- that's just a sample. Full file name is "hosts" --- no extension.

/etc/hosts on linux boxes, but if you're running a linux box you likely already know that :)

Mmmm no idea on a Mac.

Possibly C:\winnt\system32\drivers\etc on some Windows boxes.

I think windows explorer by default hides the ETC directory, you'll have to change your permissions to view it. (?)

Here's where I get the HOSTS file with lots of nasty sites already blocked.  Install that, then tag the mameworld dns onto the end of the file, as saint said, with a txt editor (double click the HOSTS file, and when windows asks you how to open, just use notepad).

http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm

Some good reading there too, gives you a better idea what the file is supposed to do.
