Title: Roms for XBOX - problems using.. Help please?
Post by: denmiclaw on February 15, 2006, 08:16:27 pm
I'm having problems buring game roms for my Xbox.

I've got the Xport emulators I want installed on the Xbox HDD.  They work fine.  My problem seems to be with the roms.  I'm trying to burn a DVD-R, with the roms in seperate directories, 1 per emulator.

I've got 4,266 files in 8 folders.  Total size 1.5gb.  Went through the process of unzipping, renaming, zipping them back up to get them within the character limit for the Xbox FAT.  Burned the DVD.  DVD reads fine on my PC.  When I put it into the Xbox, it shows as loading, then locks up the Xbox.  Or it shows as Empty.

Using a Verbatim DVD-R.  Burned it at 1x.  Closed it, no multisession, used NERO.

Dashboard is UnleashX if that helps.

Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong???

I'd think I just had too many files, but there are other Xbox DVD's with more roms that I have..

Thanks.

Did you make an XISO or did you just drag the files into nero and burn them?

I dragged and burned em, wasn't aware I had to make an ISO.

Yeah, you have to make a special Xbox formated ISO otherwise the xbox won't be able read the disc.  Put all the files you want to show up on the disc into a folder.  Then use Qwix (http://dwl.xbox-scene.com/~xbox/xbox-scene/tools/isotools/Qwix101.rar) to make an XISO.  Click on the Create ISO tab, select Local folder and then browse to the folder where you put all the files.   Click on Create ISO and then save the ISO.  Then you can burn it with what ever software you like best.  I think Nero will work fine.  I personally like to use either DVD Decrypter (http://fileforum.betanews.com/sendfile/1011845169/1/SetupDVDDecrypter_3.5.4.0.exe) or Alcohol 120% (http://download.free-downloads.net/Alcohol120_trial_1_9_5_3105.exe) but any software should work fine.

FWIW, many xbox drives are unable to read regular CD-Rs.  Try using a CD-RW or DVD-R instead.

Just so you know, he mentioned he was burning the files to a DVD-R in his first post.  But thanks for the info for future reference.

I hope you haven't renamed your roms to 8.3 convention.  Not that it's a bad thing, but you can have up to 255 characters in file names if burned to a disc vs 8.3 names for files which are FTP'd directly to the box.

As to burning, I'll 2nd using DVD Decrypter.  May want to check online to see what kind of DVD drive you've got in the xbox as there's different levels of media compatibility depending on what you have.  I'm sure google will help you there.

Correction:

You do NOT need to have 8.3 filenames for files ftp'd to the xbox.  The FatX filesystem used by the xbox has a maximum file length of either 42 or 46 characters (I don't know off the top of my head which is correct).

If you use any of the GoodXXXX tools to rename your roms, the latest version of each has a "forcexbox" command line argument that will rename all of the roms to the correct length.  I recently converted ALL of the roms in the BAED (big ass emulator discs) versions 1 and 2 to the correct length using goodtools and a custom windows forms app I wrote.

I can confirm that long(er) filenames can be transmitted.

Not sure what it is I was doing wrong, but anyway, I've got them FTP'd to my Xbox instead of on a disc.

I manually went in and unzipped, and renamed all files to fit within 42 chars, zipped em back up, and FTP'd em over.

Started getting errors copying certain files, learned I had to remove the comma from any files names heh.

Anyway, they're all on the box now, and playing fine.  Except for HugoX that is, but that's another issue with the emu I think.

Thanks!
