Title: WTB: a AMD 939 pin processor (FL)
Post by: Otraotaku on February 15, 2006, 04:11:54 pm
hey guys im building a new computer and was taught at my Vocational that the AMD has one socket to rule them all... but evidently my  instructors teachings were quite outdated...
anyway........

I bought a new motherboard and Video card to start my new build...
(so i can use my old one for my everlasting MAME Project)
.... so who has a AMD processor 939 pin laying around who wants some cheap change for?  :P

(im most definately sure my current CPU is a 754 or 940[/s]) AMD athlon XP 3000+

I'd say because most people don't trust it.  Seller is in Beijing and shown on Ebay as "private".  There are 10 positive ratings and 0 negative but aren't allowed to see any comments.  I smell a rat...

Don't bother with your camera.. Soapboy is right.

If you have an Athlon XP in there, its Socket A, which is 462 IIRC... maybe 464??

Socket A housed Athlon, AthlonXP, Duron, and some Semprons

Socket 478 is P4/Celeron

Socket 940 was AMD's server line that housed older FX series chips, and Opterons I believe.

Socket 754 is the first A64 socket, and is now the "low end" A64/Sempron socket.

Socket 939 is the current "top" socket for AMD, which uses the latest A64/A64 X2/Opteron/FX chips.

And socket 939 is on its deathbed.... don't expect a whole lot more jumps in processor speed on the s939 platform.  AMD's new socket will be out soon.

Also, in case you haven't heard, there was an operation in China selling Intel low end chips marked as high end Pentium processors.  Do you really think you'd get an AMD high end dual core for less than AMD sells them for?

 :-\

i went back and checked... it was indeed a 462... which was way out of my estimated 754/940 guess.... >.<

now i just desperately need a new processor....

hey point, you changed your avatar back i see  ;D

You're not going to find a s939 CPU for 50 bux.... no way, no how.  You may be able to find a 3000+ A64 for $100ish, but that'll be the cheapest you're gonna find.

I always look here.  Doesn't look like there is much for the Opteron though.  I relate those results to:
http://www.sharkyextreme.com/guides/WCPG/index.php
and come up with a list of a couple "acceptable" processors.  Then I go driving around to see what's available locally.

Yeah it is supposed to overclock well.  A lot of people have been able to get 2.9Ghz on air cooling.  I was able to run it last night at 2.5Ghz with no sweat at all, will crank it up more later.

My motherboard says FX/X2/Athlon also but Opteron shows up fine in it.  You might check on what motherboard you have and read up in some hardware forums about it.
From newegg: opteron 148 was $255, you can get an AMD 64 3200+ retail box for about $160ish.  3200+'s are supposed to OC decent also.

yeah beware of buying a processor on ebay.... if it comes to you not in a selaled oem pack its probably used/doesnt work i got screwed a couple of times

when it comes to processors and ram paying more for them on new egg is better cause they BACK UP their products.
