Title: Valentines Day - Love it or hate it
Post by: fredster on February 14, 2006, 12:30:47 pm
Ok, It's Vday.

Most of us have had to shell out hard earned money for Flowers, candy, or other giftage.  Some of us will enjoy the fruits of our labor, while others of us will be lectured on the value of the day.

What have you bought your lady(ies) this Vday?

My wife generally just wants to go to the movies and to a nice dinner.  She's a cheap date.   ;D

Ron & Fez (XM Radio) went on for an hour how it's a waste.  I couldn't agree more.

My wife hates Chocolate, isn't impressed by flowers, and gets mad at me if I spend money on anything, even if it's jewelry for her.

So I bought some grocery store roses.  They smell nice.  NO CARDS from me EVER!

Maybe I'll make her a macaroni Midler.

I got her a couple of DVDs, she got me a flannel shirt and a pair of jeans. I still think it's a stupid holiday, but at least it doesn't cost me a fortune like so many unfortunate others.

Bought here a dozen roses from Costco. ($19.99 instead of $50+ elsewhere) and we are going for surf and turf tonight.

I bought my wife an ipod.  Her response was "Why did you buy me this?"

She must have forgotten how much she complained that so few songs could fit on her 512mb mp3 player.  I told her to keep it because she'll really like it, but I have a feeling it might be going back and she'll pick out one of the $5.50 DVDs at walmart.

100% Scam.

I just finished printing out my valentine.  I refuse to even give Hallmark any money.

And yes, she knew what she was getting into  ;).

Valentines day is ok until you graduate high school. After that it's a scam.

And in high school its only function is make dorky teenage boys with lip fuzz ask out chicks that are and will forever be off limits to them for the rest of the schools eternal amusement.

I think parts of that applied to me through various parts of puberty. No lip fuzz, mild amounts of amusement to others for my shootdowns. Generally though, there was somebody like that at every school on V-day that became the butt of jokes and provided cheap laffs.... at least until they started humming their favorite going postal tune.

Valentines only true useful function is for 3rd through 6th graders to get out of doing school junk for an hour or so.

I got my wife a pair of shoes and some massage oils and creams and toys and made a card for her with a french haiku I wrote (haikus are great because you can have no poetry skill whatsoever and write something that sound about as good as any other haiku you've ever read :)  )

I don't know what she got me yet, but I've been finding cards she made all day long with cheesy little romatic phrases on them (for example I found another when I opened one of my textbooks at school today).

I think some of you people go out of your way to be unhappy.  Just try to trick yourself into thinking you want to go out and do something fun for Valentines day next year.  Y'all delude yourselves into thinking that you're just not getting duped by Hallmark into spending money on a fake commercial holiday.  ---fudgesicle--- that.  You weren't so principled a couple weeks ago on Superbowl Sunday.  Seriously, y'all are getting bent out of shape, flat-out refusing to go out and do something fun for Valentine's day.

How the hell can it be a scam?  Are there non-man-made holidays?  Were Halloween and Christmas here when we got here?  Were July 4th and Labor Day left here by Aliens?  Are St. Patrick's Day and Father's Day natural phenomenon?  Birthdays?  Do you not spend money on those holidays?

Quit being so grouchy and do something nice for your wife right now.  And she ought to be doing something for you too.

V-Day just drives single people (especially younger dorky guys) into depression.

It's cool once, when you're in a new relationship.

Then after that its' just a cheesy marketing ploy to force us to spend money.

My wife works in a flower shop.  This is one of the busiest days of the year for them, so she worked a 14 hour day and came home dead-tired.  I don't get her flowers for THIS holiday because it's not special.  I'll be getting her flowers for this weekend when we celebrate because she's had time to rest and relax, and we've got reservations I made a month ago for a really nice restaurant.  She's getting me the hat from Pixel just because I NEVER want crap for holidays and I know she wants to do something for me.  She also paid to send me paintballing last weekend with my buddies.  We celebrate holidays kinda strangely like that.

This is the first year in the last 5 or 6 years where my wife wasn't a florist so I hear ya Drew.  It's normally a late night the evening before getting various things ready, then a very early morning.  V-day just meant lots of work.  But not this year - first v-day in the uk so I got her some flowers and went out for Japanese.  Worked out well and didn't set me back as much as my mate.  He took her to some real fancy place - they didn't get to sit down for their meal until 10.30pm (I was in bed by then) and it probably cost him about 5-6 times more than my meal.

That's funny!  The place we're going to dinner does gift cards, and to a) ensure we had the money for this weekend and b) make sure she knew we WERE doing something to celebrate, I stopped by and picked up a gift card yesterday.  I've NEVER seen people outside waiting to get in (they've got a HUGE waiting room, and the bar is also pretty big), and yesterday, they were even packed outside!

It was funny, I walked in, and they took me to the back of the place to pay for everything.  I'm sure people were thinking "who's this guy who just waltzes right in and they seat him without even a wait....sonova..."

I asked what the wait time was when I was leaving.  TWO AND A HALF HOURS!  Same thing, these folks weren't getting in until 8:30.

Unless you can get and make reservations (not "reserved seating" or some euphemistic crap like that which DOESN'T mean "reservations"), Valentine's Day and Mother's Day are the two worst days of the year to go out to eat anyplace nicer than a gussied-up diner.

Gave my wife a emerald and diamond cross.  Retails for about $450, got it and a chain for $312.00 tax and all.

Seriously, y'all are getting bent out of shape, flat-out refusing to go out and do something fun for Valentine's day.

I tried... made reservations for a great surprise place and a show afterwards... babysitter stood us up.   >:(
