Heres a sad story for you -
When I was a kid, not even 12, I remember watching for hours as some older kids was playing a video game at the arcade as my mom bowled. I remember really wanting to play this game, but so many people were playing it. I had 1 quarter left towards the end of the night, but people were still playing it. I put my quarter on the bezel in line behind a few other quarters. I watched till my quarter was next in line. Finally, the guy in front of me finished so I stepped up to the machine and grabbed my quarter and.... well, lets just say this is the first time I ran into a bully. He said it was his quarter, I said it was mine, but he was bigger and you know how that goes when your a kid... In the end, I left the arcade and he had my quarter. Mom didn't know. Sucks eh? The year had to be around 1985 or 86.
One of the things I love about Mame is nostalgia, but another thing I love is putting "free" quarters in. Beating games I never had the money to complete as a kid. One of the first things I did when I found Mame was run Gauntlet and inserting about 100 credits. I would've loved to do that when that game hit the arcades.
Anyhow, on to the game, the game I'm remembering has these characteristics. It was a platform style game, running from screen to screen from left to right on a horizontal display. You were a wizard (wearing blue robe?). You had to rescue a princess from a dragon(I think it was a dragon, it couldn't been a giant bird). I remember something about a golden egg. And I also remember jumping in a window and appearing in a different setting after going through the window.
Yeah, it's pretty vague. But, if anyone can tell me what this game was I would surely appreciate it and I'll play it tonight.
Thanks,
Lewis

Could be 'Cadash' ??....http://www.klov.com/game_detail.php?letter=&game_id=7254
But that's '89. There was a 'Mage' you could choose, hence the 'Wizard' reference and you had to rescue a princess from a 'demon'...

I'm going to go home and give it a shot.
heres the thing. If it was 89, that made me 16. I remember crying when that kid took my quarter. If I was 16 when that happened, I may just start crying again. lol. Thanks for the suggestion - either way it looks like a cool game. I'll give it a shot, but I think I'm thinking of something different.

Well Im nt sure on the rescue Princess theme, but jumping throuhg a window to get tothe next level sounds a bit like Solomons Key?

A quick search through KLOV gives me these possibilities:
I am not familiar with any of these games, but they all involve wizards and would
have been around in 1985.
Dragon Buster (http://www.klov.com/game_detail.php?letter=&game_id=7641)
Cavelon (http://www.klov.com/game_detail.php?letter=&game_id=7294)
Wiz (http://www.klov.com/game_detail.php?letter=&game_id=10457)
Lizard Wizard (http://www.klov.com/game_detail.php?letter=&game_id=8435)
The Fairyland Story (http://www.klov.com/game_detail.php?letter=&game_id=7751)
These games involve a Princess
Arabian (http://www.klov.com/game_detail.php?letter=&game_id=6899)
Ghosts & Goblins (http://www.klov.com/game_detail.php?letter=&game_id=7938)
Legend of Kage (http://www.klov.com/game_detail.php?letter=&game_id=8406)

its got to be the fairyland story..

How cool - I didn't know you could search KLOV.
Thanks for the links... oddly enough none of those looked right, but it doesn't mean it isn't. Fairly often I'm surprised at how my memory makes things better then it actually was. Take the game Space Ace.... I loved it. Playing it again is nostalgic and a dissappointment all wrapped up together.
I'll try these games when I get home and see if something clicked. The whole evening with that video game is like a surpressed memory. heh.

Thats it! Your a damn genius!
Sh!t... I was 12. I was kind of hoping I was like... 9. Crying over a quarter at 12. How did you guess it? Thanks so much... I'll finally get to play it. Awesome.

Man, I'm still impressed.
I can't wait to go home and play.
Thanks to everyone who helped. :)

OMG! ...doh

Who's going to break it to him that it uses a push/pull spinner?

Then who's going to break it to him oscarcontrols is currently out of business...

son of a....
like I said, I never got to play it. I did load it up and drop a quarter in it though. ;D

So does that mean a game like forgotten worlds which had a spinner and you could push down on the spinner to do a super move will never be on a mame cabinet and authentic? Bummer!
-
you could always build your own arcade controls...but that might be too obvious in this forum.

Don't think like that. :( Look at this as an opportunity to expand your engineering knowledge. ;D

Magician Lord (NEO GEO)
Jeeeez
-
a push pull spinner, AND a button top joy with a trigger?
You picked a doozie!
-
It's basically the tron controls isn't it? You could fake it by using a tron setup w/multiple buttons on the joy....
...or just use a regular joy, a spinner, and your feet. Good to go.
:)
If it was any other control I'd say it was easy to mimic, the push/pull spinner seems hard though...
-
Yep, it's disc of tron controls.
If you can find someone willing to give up his oscar push/pull spinner...
Maybe slikstik or groovygamegear will do something sometime.
-
Just another 'be aware' thing - the last one on ebay went for ~$340.
So... ;D
