Yeah I know you might do digital, but here.  He's got a few hacks that are pretty cool

The nice thing about doing stuff optically like that is that you don't have to spend the time in post getting the effect.  The downside is that you have to actually build the stuff.  I typically hit the special effects in Photoshop.
