Title: Need help removing car stereo (removed!)
Post by: JoyMonkey on February 11, 2006, 09:33:58 pm
I thought that any crack head could just yank a head unit straight out of a dash? Have I not consumed enough crack?

I'm trying to get this dusty old Alpine CDE-7831 head unit out of my dirty old Volvo 740 so I can replace it with something that will let me listen to actual music. I've pulled. I've pried. The fecker just won't budge.
The stereo itself seems to be mounted inside a cheap plastic bezel thing. I have a replacement bezel, so maybe I should just smash the old bezel and see if it'll come out in pieces?

Any ideas?

Here's some (un)helpfull photos:

Could be a couple different things.

1.  There is a special tool to remove the unit.  Sometimes there are two "keys" you slide along the sides of the unit to get it to release.

2.  You need to remove some bottom and/or top trim pieces around the radio and plasitc outer bezel to get to the screws that hold the entire thing (radio and mounting bezel unit) in place.

or something else I haven't come across...I hate car interiors, its too damn easy to break something trying to figure out how it all comes apart. >:(

The new stereo did come with two 'keys' to slide in the sides, but they don't work for this old stereo. I'll see if I can get the grey trim to come off, but I don't think it'll move without breaking. Breaking the old stereo shouldn't bother me, but it just feels wrong. If nothing comes off easily, I guess I should just go smashy smashy.

2 flat peices of metal should pop the tabs holding it in..

If you dont give a ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- about the old radio, you can yank it out.. but you might end up killing your dash..

Got it! The brassy looking things in the last photo needed to be jammed up, then it just slides out. Thanks for the input!

Now to fix the sloppy wiring job...
