I'm not sure where to put this, so move it if needed. ???
Is there a web site that lists the default buttons for the roms? I am having a hard time with some games like WWF Wrestlemania because I would like to change the buttons to suit me better. I want to change the default controls, but I can't see what punch is assigned too. I am using mamewah, and realized that when you go in it says P1 button 1, ect, but it is still confusing to me. It took me almost 2 games to just get a three button layout on NBA Hangtime the way I wanted it.

You could use a program like Johnny5. That uses some files together to calculate what buttons do what.

Thanks, that looks like it should help. I'm gonna try it right now.

OK, so I have that running, but I have another problem. For some reason, all of my games work fine in mamewah. However, when I type c:\mame\mame.exe wwfmania into the cmd, it says that all the files are missing. This wouldn't be a problem, except nothing shows up now when I try to run johnny5 either. I just get the button layout, but no labels.

Anybody have any ideas?

Yep, you are running mame form outside of the mame folder.
Typing this at c:\ will cause mame to run but form the root folder
c:\mame\mame.exe mygame
Now, if you changed to the mame folder (c:\mame) and type this it will find the folders.
mame.exe mygame.

Ok, I have some Johnny5 information working now, but I can not get any controls to display. When I try to bring it up, I get the game information on the buttom, and what type of controler it uses, but I can't see anything for the buttons. I believe it probably has something to do with the ctrlr files, but I'm not sure. I run mamewah, so my default controls are in there.
If it is any help, I have mamewah in my documents. Can anybody help me out?

I don't think your default controls are in mamewah.
I have some Johnny5 troubleshooting info at http://www.mameworld.net/tigerheli/johnny/ (buried amongst the flotsam and jetsom).
Two things I can tell you.
Make sure you have a mame.ini (for mame not mamewah) and make sure it matches your .exe (i.e. if you use mamepp.exe, make sure you have a mamepp.ini file.
See http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=49350.msg480560#msg480560 for help with a similar problem.
Beyond that, troubleshoot in steps - Get MAME set-up and working (ensure it changes key assignments when you change them) (outside of MAMEwah).
Get Johnny5 displaying labels.
Verify Johnny5's labels match MAME's labels.
Verify Johnny5 launches when MAME is paused (if desired).
Integrate MAME back into MAMEwah.

I got it working! Thanks for your help.

Ok, now I have another problem. johnny5 runs fine when I call for it on its own. I am trying, however, to get it to come up when the game is paused. I downloaded the script and autohotkey program, and the only thing I changed in the script was the path to johnny5. When I pause the game, however, johnny5 says the game I'm looking for is not found. Then, after I unpause the game, after about 1 to two seconds it repauses on its own. Even after I esc from mame, the p button causes johnny5 to pop up. I have the J5 batch file and autohotkey script in the johnny5 folder, which is in my mame folder. What do I have wrong?

With that method, there is a timing issue that was never fully resolved. Or if it has, I never figured it out, and I tried about fifty different timing configurations. Tigerheli is the one to ask on this one. HowardC wrote the program and he might be a good source as well.

Please tell HOW you got it working, as I (and others) have always had the initial problem you were reporting.
-
I had never created a mame.ini file, so that was the problem. It wasn't seeing my controls layout, so there wasn't any controls to display. I never did get it to pop up with mame, or through mamewah. I just got it to work on its own.

Timing Issue is still not resolved, AFAICT. Best advice I currently have is to wait for MikeQ to get around to adding this to PowerMAME.
