Title: How to use the Mame Resolution Tool?
Post by: electricd on February 09, 2006, 10:05:18 am
Hello,

I used this a long time ago, but am doing a new system.  I have an ArcadeVGA card and a D9200 monitor.  I use the tool as suggested in the ReadMe file, but it appears that no INI files are created.  Also, when looking at my mame.ini file (.103) the INIPath variable is commented out.  Does Mame not use this anymore, and if not, can I still use the ResTool to get the proper resolutions.  Can anyone walk me through it?  Thanks!

Also, it looks like the avga9200.txt only has 27 resolutions.  Is this correct?  They are all between 50 and 60hz.  Is this the correct file for the arcadevga card?  Seems like it should support more native resolutions than this, or am I just missing something?

What is the mame resolution tool?

Personnally, i use AVRES  (downloadable from the ultimarc site)  , it is very easy to use and generate INI for you.

I don't know if you use a Front End with mame. But if you try the new version AtomicFE , you can download a Plug'n Play module for MAME from the site too. This module contains all INI files required for ArcadeVGA.

If you don't want use Atomic , you can just download the module, extract it, a got the INI folders which contains all Ini files.

I hope it helps

NM, I spoke too soon again.  I figured it out (wasn't finishing the step of actually generating the ini files!), however, is it necessary to run the tool on the same computer that you are going to end up on?  For example, I am configuring everything on my laptop and then going to copy it over to the machine.  Is there any reason why the Resolution tool must be run on the same setup as its going to end up on (ie, does the monitor come into play anywhere on this program, or just the video card?)  Thanks in advance!

I think it is just the video card. And even, if you use AVRES , you don't care of the video card.

It generates INI file for the ArcadeVGA anyway  , even if the card is not installed. Then you have just to copy ini file on the other config if you want.

I couldn't find AVRES, but I think I have the other working now.

27 resolutions is correct: http://www.ultimarc.com/avgainst.html

No, you can run it on any PC.

That is fine...the only thing is the 'test' button will only work as intended on your 'arcade' pc.
