Whoa!  Nice effects.

Set up a projector behind an acryllic pane, lined with LEDS and photodiodes(?).
Other than the projector, it sounds pretty cheap.

Unless, the acryllic is "soft",  does it need to be to reduce the light?

How are the LED's detected?  I assume the led's are aligned across the top/left and detected bottom/right.  This would give the x,y locations.  What devices could be used to detect the leds on the other side?

Anybody have an ACM account?  I would like to read the .pdf.

I'm a nerd for asking, I know.   :D

"How are the LED's detected?"

The title of the paper is:

Low-cost multi-touch sensing through frustrated total internal reflection

My guess?

Shine light thru the edge of the plastic.  Where you touch will create a loss path for the light (think of a glass of water - reflective until you touch the side of the glass, at which point you can see your fingertips) and the system is able to interpret the intensity changes as a position.

See?  You're not the only geek... :)

Shine light thru the edge of the plastic.

Yeah, I figured that much.

Got the paper.
