Title: Prob. a dumb analog question...
Post by: rhoelsch on February 13, 2003, 04:57:03 pm
Forgive me, but I can't find this on the boards, for some reason; I'm sure it's an easy answer, but darn if I haven't been able to find it:

Is it possible to just to get a retail USB analog flight stick, attach the bugger onto your cp, plug it in, and it works for Mame analog games?  I don't think it'd require an Optipac, correct?  My digital interface is just not the ideal for Star Wars, Spy Hunter, etc., and since I'm still building my cp, I'm hoping there's an easy & cheap way to do this.  What are my options?

Sorry for the newb post, but I wasn't getting anywhere after a half hour of searching, and I know it'd be an easy reply, so...

I dont see why it wouldnt work.. as long as your OS and your version of MAME supports USB in the first place.. I would recommend using MAME Analog+  because it gives you a lot more control over analog controls and fixes some bugs in regular MAME

Yes if the analog joystick is recognized by Windows then it will work in Mame.

How about the pedals you can buy for PC racing games and flight sim games? Will those work in Mame for the Racing games?

The flight stick will be great for "AD stick", lightgun, paddle, and pedal input types.

Not much better than digital inputs for dial or trackball games.

So StarWars & SpyHunter will be great with a flight stick.  Plug it in, let the drivers install, enable joysticks in mame, (check which joystick # the flight stick gets if you have more than one joystick installed, setup inputs if it's not joystick 1), and have fun.

They work, too, mostly.
If you play games like hard drivin' with two (or more) PEDAL type inputs (not AD_STICK up & down for gas and brake), and if you have the your pedals set to dual pedals (not composite/combined pedals), mame will only respond to the lower half of the pedal.  I mean, the first half you depress the pedal, mame doesn't use.  The halfway point is where mame acts as if you are starting to press the pedal.

Otherwise, they're good to go.

Thanx for the responses.  Hmmm...this may just put my design on pause for a bit--good to hear (strangely enough, I don't recall seeing a lot of these being used...)

Anyone have a recommendation of model/brand of flight stick to use w/ mame?  (still have to figure out how to mount to my cp as well)
