Title: Oil primer-latex paint (not a "rehash")...
Post by: rwhip41 on February 03, 2006, 02:55:34 pm
I know primers and paints have been discussed recently (about which to use), but I have a question/issue to ask...

...has anyone had issues with extreme ease of creating a scrape in their paint, exposing the primer? I am using an oil-based primer (tinted grey) and a latex black gloss enamel. By "extreme ease", I mean casually glancing my the top of my fingernail against it. It is dry to the touch and only one coat, drying for 5 hours at 65 F. I just put the second coat on after my discovery, but I'm not sure if that will help things down the road. The primer was dried overnight at 61 F.

Was the paint simply uncured? Is this common? I'm not well-versed on painting, but the (dedicated) paint store guy said latex on oil-primer works fine. Any feedback would be appreciated.

Latex on oil primer DOES work.  It's not normally recommended, but it certainly isn't a terrible problem.  The latex paint just needs to cure, and it'll take a bit longer over the oil primer.  It'll take a bit longer than you'd think too, and 5 hours is about 2 weeks short ;)

How long did you let your oil primer cure?  That might slow down the final curing process even longer.

I used to work in a hardware store, and the recommended best practice was to use oil-based primer when using a latex paint as the top coat.  At least that is what the paint manufacturers always told us to tell the customers.
