Hello to the Group!
I am in the middle of building my first cabinet and like the KNIEVEL KUSTOM work in mamewah and his cabinet. I have my own ideas but am having problems with mameWAH and wonder if anyone can help me.
I am sorry if these topics have already been covered elsewhere and perhaps you could point me in the right direction if they have?
Anyhoo, I would like to know how to use the mame WAH layout designer and to get the layouts working in mamewah. I have done a good backdrop, moved and configured the games and artwork lists etc and saved it as a layout.
But everytime I try to use it in mamewah, even if i use mamewah config, I just get a blank screen. It refuses to use it, and either crashes or does the blank screen thing. What am I doing wrong? If I leave mamewah with the default layouts and all as standard it works, as long as mamewah is installed on the C: drive and all is left alone, I can get it to read the roms if they are on the d: drive by editing the config file and thats ok. But as I change anything in the layouts section, I cant get it to work. HELP!!!! lol.
Also what do you have to modify or change to get the mouse to work in the games you are running? Is that in an INI file? I would like to get the mouse to work for op wolf and starwars etc. Its easy to config stuff in mame32 under winxp but not this way!!! Any help would be great.
I will keep you posted on the cabinet builds and have a website of my own with my custom pc work on it if anyone wants a look. This is where I am going to put up the pics of the cabinet as I build it -

Thanks for the help!!

Mamewah - Put your .lay file and the artwork that goes with it into a folder. Call the folder mame1 for easy reference.
Presuming you are using this for mame then in your mamewah ini folder you should have a file called mame.ini
You want to call your layout mame.lay and the background art mame-main.jpg
Now go into your mamewah config file and where it asks for the layout name type mame1 to tell it to look in the folder you are storing your layout in.
Now when you select mame in mamewah it will show your new layout.
Basically the layout and artwork must have the same name as the ini file for the emulator they are going to be used for in order for mamewah to know when you want to use them.
Hope that made sense.
The other thing with a mouse in mame, just open your mame folder and look for the mame.ini (not the one in mamewah). Open the mame.ini with notepad and in the section called Input Device Options, change mouse to 1 and a little further down where it says lightgun device change it to mouse. (see example below)
### Input device options ###
mouse 1
joystick 1
lightgun 0
dual_lightgun 0
offscreen_reload 0
steadykey 0
keyboard_leds 1
led_mode ps/2
a2d_deadzone 0.300000
# ctrlr <NULL> (not set)
paddle_device mouse
adstick_device keyboard
pedal_device keyboard
dial_device mouse
trackball_device mouse
lightgun_device mouse

Thanks for the reply! I have been away this weekend but working on the cabinet today.
Ok I checked for a mame.ini file. There was not one in the mame folder, despite having run mame from there! So I downloaded one , changed it like you said and THE MOUSE WORKS NOW!!
Thanks!! And with MameWah too...thats great.
BUT
I still cant get the layout I want to display to come up. All I get is the blank screen with games list!??
This is my mamewah ini file below. I have made my own cosmic layout and its in a folder in the "layouts" folder. I have everything in a folder called mame on my C: drive. Mamewah is in their along with mame , then there are other folders with the roms and layouts - eg c:\mame\layouts\cosmic
thats the file and directory structure I am trying to get mamewah to use as a layout. All the files are named as you said with the artwork and everything in the cosmic folder, and still no luck on getting it to display.
Here is the ini file
Anyone got any ideas on what I am doing wrong?
Thanks!!!

I have had the same problem.. Well i think... When you are editing your layout are you "adding" the background image? If so that was my problem kept getting the black screen after i added the image. DON'T ... just edit everything else in your layout and use photoshop or a paint program to edit the background image. then keep the pic in the same folder as your *.lay--- for some reason when you manually select the background image in the mamewah layout config it covers with a black screen. if you look closely you can see the yellow lines outlining where the background is so that may help you in your layout editing.
