probably been asked somewhere but couldn't quite discern it in search. which types of mame work in winNT, if any? and does that include mame32? looking for a cheap laptop for an upcoming project and the occasional one has NT on it.
thanks,
danny.
oh, and i always thought that microsoft were so cool making a version just for my home state in australia, the Northern Territory- abbr NT (",)

Ermmm so you don't actually have a PC with NT on it right now and you think Mame might be a problem running on NT.....
The simple answer here is don't buy a PC with NT on it! Or install a useable OS after you buy it. NT just isn't a gamers OS.... There's a lot wrong with it for our purposes. I wouldn't even recommend anybody to try and use Win2000 let alone NT.
IMHO the best version of windows for Mame is Win98SE especially on an older laptop with limited memory and processor speed.

I have been using W2k Pro for a quite a while with both Mame32 and Analog. Never had a problem. The 2k kernal is extremely soild compared to 98. The only problem I would see with running NT would be the lack of USB support
-
I've been using W2k since it came out and have had no problems with it...

Fair comments chaps! But he's looking at a cheap used laptop.... Win 98SE has much lower resource requirements than Win2000 and in his particular application will be much more likely to work well for him.
In any event, he's asking about the earlier Win NT which IMHO is best avoided altogether for this application.

he's also looking at a laptop that allready has the operating system installed in it... I didn't use MAME back when I ran NT 4.0 so I'm not sure how it performs, but I've run it on W2K which uses a NTFS file system and it runs fine.

The only way to know is to try it. Windows NT used different API calls, and handled hardware differently than 98 or 2000. The file system should have no bearing on this type of application. Also, NT is not able to use more recent versions of DirectX (I don't know if this would affect MAME or not). If I get bored, maybe I'll load up an NT system and see.

hehe. its funny because my plan is to get whatever is cheapest and if the OS doesnt work, then i have a copy of win98se to install! i'm just a bit nervous about drivers and stuff but i've been reasured in this forum that i should be able to get them if the laptops drivers arent supported in win98. if i was getting a pc i wouldnt give a damn what os was on it! just trying to cover my bases i guess. if worst comes to worst i can always sell it to this guy:
