Title: Quick Summary
Post by: jelwell on February 01, 2006, 08:33:48 pm
Fatwallet forums have this coolish feature called "Quick Summary".

Here's an example (http://www.fatwallet.com/t/18/575167/)

It's basically like a mini-wiki per topic. It's especially useful for topics that run a few pages long. It lets anyone summarize the contents of the topic.

I know it sounds like a tool for the lazy. But it's actually a way to convert stale topics into information sources. Once a topic is talked through it's useful to have all the useful tidbits organized into a meaningful fashion. Currently this seems to be left up to either the topic starter (which often is some new person asking a question - not someone with answers) or it's left for a third party to catalog and build an external website.

Here's an example, imagine trying to figure out anything useful from a 14 page topic, like this one (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?topic=48982.520). The "Quick Summary" for this 14 page topic might look something like this:
Quote
Quick Summary
New LightGuns
  • Buy them here or here
  • Better than Act Labs
  • Continuous Tracking
  • No White Flash
  • Two player supported
  • etc

There have been reports that Two players simultaneously work just fine. Although there seem to be configuration issues and the version of MAME you need is unclear (analogmame+ / advanceMAME)? Someone please update this Summary with configs when that is sorted out.

I think that code is proprietary to fatwallet, but it wouldn't be too hard for someone to probably create a similar wiki type plugin for SMF based boards.  it would definitely be something for discussion over at the simple machines forum.
