Title: RetroZone Feedback
Post by: jcrouse on January 31, 2006, 08:05:59 am
I have done much business with Retrozone and would HIGHLY recommend them. I have about 20 of their upgraded controllers and they all work flawlessly.

uh, ok.  this might work better in consoles or buy/sell/trade though.  seems kinda fishy too, but i bet they do work well.  too bad they are way too expensive.

Nothing fishy. On the main news page the admin ask for feedback.

Nothing more,

I also have a couple things from RetroZone. The best of which is the USB FourScore. Yeah it is a little pricey, but when I spit the cost with a couple friends who really want to relive the NES days and we all still have working controllers. RetroZone is great! Nice e-mail communication and fast shipping. I give them two blistered thumbs up.

I bought the USB NES kit and solderred it up myself. Not bad...  wasnt impressed at all with the shipping and lack of communication I got.

I got a few of these for xmas.  The NES one is the only one I've used so far and it works quite well.  I got adaptors for the Intellivision and Colecovision to use with my existing controllers.  I do wish they made one for the Odyssey2 and one to allow old Apple II analog controllers to work.

Another related, and very good item, is the Stelladaptor.

As for communication etc my fiancee mentioned that it was difficult.  I was actually supposed to get these *last* year for xmas.    :P

So product is good, service not so good...

Yeah, my NES thing doesnt always work... its weird... it enumerates most of the time, but others it just does nothing.  If I log off and on again it will suddenly see it though...

I dont think it was worth the 23 dollars, especially since you can make your own (found this out after I orderred) with a PIC and a few other parts.... which I plan on doing of course.

that's what i've heard.  so to sum up, poor communication, slow shipping and high prices.  but the best place to get pre-usb'd retro controllers that i know of.

sorry bout the accusation jcrouse.

i've seen how-to things online for some of the more well known pads though, so if someone is looking.

This sounds more like a general usb problem then the gamepad...unless you have other usb game pads that don't have this problem. But it could go either way.

I've ordered from them before and didn't have a problem with the shipping.  I also didn't have a problem with feed back either.  They ansered all my questions before and after my purchase pretty quick.  I haven't had a problem with any of my controllers so far.

UndeadMeat: It is much cheaper if you just get a fourscore off of ebay and then hack it yourself.  You can usually find them for around $5-10 shipped and he will sell you a conversion kit to hack it for $17.  Buch better price than paying $60 for a pre-hacked one.

I think mine is a general USB problem, but only for the HID class maybe?  My printer(s) both work okay, all the cameras, the card reader built into the laptop.... only this seems to mess up ervery now and then...

Ah, but you see, that would require soldering skills and time I don't have. And splitting it with friends only cost me $20 anyway. Call me lazy if you wish.  ;D

maybe if retrozone assigned numbers to joysticks, so you could be sure that one was always number one.  i tried using an xbox controller for mame in my early days and they would always switch around on me.  pain in the arse.

After you plug in one of this controllers, then are the buttons mappable?(ie:How does it work if you want to play NES game with their NES controller on my Mame cabinet)?

This will depend on the emulator but I have used about 20 different controllers with various emulators and have had no problems what-so-ever. The are automatically detected by Windows XP and all the buttons and D-pads are seen as button presses to the emulator. For the most part, you launch the emulator, start configuration and simply press the corresponding pad button.

Question for anyone who has the FourScore...
What controllers work with it? Of course the original controller works and I would assume the NES Advantage and NES Max should work also. Probably not the lightgun......Do any of the others work?  Powerglove......PowerPad.........(what was that damn robot called.....Gyro???)........any of the others I can't think of...............

Has anyone tried this with an Astrocade controller...if so does the potentiometer function actually work...you know the knob that you turn??

I can tell you that the lightgun does not work with the four-score. No one has gotten the lightgun interfaced with the PC.

If I had to guess, judging by there FAQs page, it will work with the powerglove in pad mode (which is pretty much pointless).

Just to make sure that I have this straight:  Do you actually get the retro controller with the USB connection for the $23 price?  Or do you have to supply your OWN controller?  For instance, the intellivision adapter.  Do you actually get an Intellivision controller with the USB adapter for the package price or do I have to supply my own Intellivision controller to work with the USB adapter they are selling?
Thanks.

No, the Intellivision one is just a cable. You plug your controller into the cable that converts it to USB. You can get the NES controller prepackaged the way you are talking about, but the rarer ones you have to supply.

Win one on ebay and have the seller ship it directly to retrozone. You will have to get a quote from them of how much it will cost to modify it, but they say they will modify any of them. I'm sure it will knock a few bucks off the price. Its too bad they won't sell you the parts.
