Howdy,
I have a few basic questions since I'm new to setting up Mame.
I know that I need the highscores.dat file for Mame to save high scores on most games. So, where do I get highscores.dat and how do I use it?
Also, does Mame save the settings somewhere when I change the button layout by pressing <tab> and going ot Current Game Settings... Or do I have to change them back every time I play a game?
Also I'm running on a P3 1Ghz so I'm trying Mamewah. I know there's some way to have Mamewah display the controls for each game on the screen while I'm scrolling through the list. How do I do this?
I think that's all for now.
Thanks for the help!

I myself keep loosing the URL for the hiscore but GOOGLE gives it to you on top. Search for hiscore.dat

Yes, it will save all the setting for the games that you change input. It saves it as GAMENAME.CFG inside your cfg folder.

Maybe Minwah will help on this one, at this moment, I am using a diff FE.

What's the difference between highscore.dat and hiscore.dat? I've seen them both mentioned.

I'm open to using different FEs but on a P3 !ghz some seem slow. I tried GameEX and it looked so inredibly sluggish I could hardly get it to respond to me. MameWah seems less graphic intensive so it runs fine. If there others that can do that on a slower system, feel free to give me some other tips.

... but it takes a fair deal of configuration.

Not to Hijack - but maybe someone could do some hand holding and explain to me exactly how the hiscore.dat file works. I have mamewah installed and the 1.03 version of mame. I dropped the hiscore.dat file in place and made sure the path is properly configured in mamewah. But - ms pacman won't save scores. The williams games do - but they are the only ones. Any help?

I dunno what Minwah got to do with the hiscore but you need to configure the path in MAME.INI.

Your right - typo. I do have it configured in the mame.ini to be the hi directory and the filename is correct. Just curious if there is anything else I'm supposed to do.
if thats it, then I don't know. Frogger, Ms. Pacman, Pengo and pretty much all the other non-williams games keep highscore.

You don't put hiscore.dat in the hi folder. It goes in the root mame folder with the executable. It then creates .hi files that will go into the hi folder.

Alright I am going to revive this. I need some hand holding as well! I DL hiscore and put it in the MAME folder. I tried with it zipped. Nothing, I unzipped it and still nothing. I am trying to keep my high score for Donkey Kong! My husband and I are battleing!! I would like to keep the high scores after shut down. So what did I do wrong? People have mentioned the Mame.ini file. Where do I find this? DO I need to config that to something? Thanks.
OH I am running Mamewah and Mame 103.
