Title: Wiring Joysticks
Post by: rosebudcassidy on February 11, 2003, 02:53:08 pm
Well I have my hacked keyboard all mapped out in a Matrix and am willing to live with the number of simultaneous key presses (14).

I am now trying to map out my controls, can someone explain how to map out an 8 way joystick. I think I understand the the diagnol hits two switches how does this get translated in MAME.

Lets say that up is 'N' and right is 'W' does the the 2 o'clock position translate to N + W. How does the wiring work.

I have searched everywhere for details on this topic and have come up short. If anyone has a link to point me to it would be much appreciated.

Wire UP to N, and RIGHT to W.

Moving U+R will send both key presses to the PC.

Thnaks for the help!

So at any given time I would only be using 2 keys out of my matrix (1 up/down and 1 left/right combined). This means that I can place the up-down keys in a row and the left right in another row, needing a total of 4 keys per joystick. 4 of these keys (2 per joystick) need to be able to be pressed without blocking (including any other player action buttons).

Sorry if I am droning on but I am close to putting it all together, just want to make sure I have this clear.

 ???

Well I have one more question I am hoping someone can answer. I mapped my keyboard and came up with a 9 X 15 Matrix (15 on Y axis, one row has nothing in it).

According to a tutorial I read at http://www.mameworld.net/emuadvice/keyhack2.html I should be able to score 14 keys out of this.  Number of rows down the side.

Well I am testing it with keyscan and can only get to 10 key presses, any ideas. If I need to buy an I-Pac my project may be on hold for awhile.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. After all that great sodering and wiring I realy was hoping it would work. I know I should have tested before had, but I am a newbie.....

FYI every row of my Matrix has only one key press in it, except the joystick assignments which have two (left/right, up/down)

HELP
