Title: phpBB - We've all seen it, we're all using it, but how do I play around with it?
Post by: Crazy Cooter on January 26, 2006, 07:35:36 pm
So I "installed" in locally.  Now how do I edit the templates?  Do I seriously have to code this stuff by hand if I want my own look?  What about a *ahem* simple color change?  I'm used to WYSIWYG & phpbb.com is a little overwhelming  ::).

Can someone nudge me in the right direction?

you need to read the readme i think...there is an admin page you can goto, like a control panel.

Notepad messes up the formating of the template code.  Front Page 98 doesn't though.  I can open the cfg and tpl files and see it as formatted text.  It makes a bit more sense that way.

Now can I have a "window" open so I can change some colors/images in the subsilver style image folder and view what graphic it is?  Or am I going about this the wrong way?

I used PHPBB on my old forum. There are very few features and the admin interface seriously sucks. When I moved the forum to the new host I switched to SMF software, the same software that this forum uses. It's much, much better. Try it out and see if you agree with me.

WHOA...  :o

SMF is much simpler.  Is it easiest to just upload it to a temp directory and start playing with it "live" on the server, or should I try to get it running "semi-live" locally?

Much easier to just upload to your host in a temp dir and play.
