i know there has been alot of info on this, but the pages i've found pertaining to it have disappeared, and i really don't know what words to use to search for it. can anyone help me thin my install of windows to necassary stuff? i'm not looking for internet use or anything other than emulators. thanks.
-
Are you talking about what features are ok to uninstall, or more like which services are safe to shut down?
-
both. i just need to trim the fat so i don't waste cpu power but still have a stable environment, making more space would be cool too, but i'm not too worried about that. there used to be a website that detailed what things did and when you could delete them, but it's gone now. i figured someone might be able to point me to a new one or give me some words to search for.

I recommended GAMEXP since he mentioned it was a Gaming only machine. But for anyone else who uses there machines for internet and other stuff just be sure to UNCHECK SERVICES IN THE OPTIONS MENU. The reason is because it turns off some services needed for windows update. It does a pretty good job at reducing some overhead and freeing up some memory. I used to do all that stuff one by one when fixing some pc's. Gamexp cut's my work my 25% So if anyone has any trouble using it let me know and i'll help you.

Will the Viper recommendations work for Windows 2000 as well?
-
Sorry. I'm only familiar with XP.

Gonzo,
Do you notice a considerable difference to the CPU using GameX. I'm all for giving more CPU to MAME but if the difference is just minimal than I don't think it would be worth it.
thank you for your help

I used the Black Viper page as a guide and while it didn't make any difference in the speed the games run (like making those slowpokes like Cruisin' USA playable), it cut a huge amount off the boot time. My machine boots in just under 30 seconds. It was nearly a minute and a half before disabling the unnecessary services.
-
It doesn't actually make a huge difference if say you have 512mb of memory and or a very fast CPU 2.0+ But people shouldn't be scared to use it since it has a restore function so if you mess up you can just restore it. It makes a restore within the program automatically every time you use it. If you just UNCHECK SERVICES in the options everything should work fine.
Here is a list of services I have disabled on my computer. It's the one i'm typing this from.
