i'm looking to make some control panel artwork for a (true) 49 way panel, and was wondering what games are playable with 49 ways in mame right now? i'm using randy's interface. i think sinistar and arch rivals work, but what about pigskin and any other games?
i tried searching, but just got a bunch of topics about randy's product, and not really pertaining to my subject. thanks guys.

Pigskin is playable. Controls.dat lists blaster as 49way as well.
You may have some luck with analog games like food fight, road runner, tailgunner, EFTPOTRM, and alpine racer. I haven't tried them out, though.
-
well, it looks like my artwork will be either arch rivals or sinistar, and three buttons a person. thanks mahuti. (dang, those were an expensive couple of games)
-
what does 49 mean? and the purpose? I am truely clueless........
-
lets start with an 8 way. it has eight directions that you can move, 4 corners and four faces, like this:
000
0 0
000
a 49 way has 49 directions, but not in a circle. it uses concentric circles (circles within other circles), like this:
0000000
0000000
0000000
000 000
0000000
0000000
0000000
it includes the center as a switch, but i left it off for visual purposes. so if you pushed right slowly, first your guy would walk, then jog, and then run. get it? as you hit each switch in that direction, games usually take it to mean different levels of speed.

sounds kool. but I guess as you were saying what games use it?
-
In the same manner that the 49 way has 49 ways, one of them being "dead center"... an 8 way has 9 directions (one of them being "center" and a 4 way has 5 directions (one being center.) If you're calling them 8 / 4 ways then you could refer to the 49 way as a 48 way.
-
Oh, and whatzcrackn... you can use a 49way with the GP-wiz hardware to play 8,4, and 49 way games... and have software automagically switch between the modes based on the game you're playing.
-
don't forget 2-way horizontal and vertical and a 45 degree 4-way for qbert.
i was just going to have one joystick panel, but there doesn't seem to be any fe support or mame support yet for switching. you can do your own stuff, but i'm not that good at programming.
with randy's encoder, you can also switch using buttons. if you want to know more, skim the 18 page thread for more info.

thx! so the 49 way is the way to go? what all do you need to hook it up?
-
man, it's a chore. but I love it.
Lessee....
49way stick $40
GP-wiz $40
to automatically switch based on the rom you're playing you'll need a;
Front end
MAME
set49way app
controls.dat
a bat file to be called by the front end that calls set49way and then runs mame.
The best part about it is, when guests come over, they never ever complain about the joystick not working right... it's always just what they need, 2way, 4way, 4way diag, 8 way, 49way. The only thing it can't do is full analog games, yoke games, that kind of thing. So I leave those games off of my list.
With the new lighting stuff... I can now light up the buttons to be used on a game, so there's even less confusion on which one to use.

And if you want a good guide to do what mahuti said

There were some "9 way" joysticks. Optical ones, and for two or three games only IIRC (anyone remember the name?). Like you said, they output the same as "normal" 8 ways, so either 8 ways should be called 9 ways or 49 ways by called 48 ways to be consistant, but you never heard of marketing have you? ;)
[rant]"HDTV" LCD, plasma, & DLPs on sale that don't display at any of the many "HDTV" resolutions, let alone in the two (US) "standard" 720p (1280x720) and 1080i (1920x1080). Resolutions like 1820x1024, 860x480, and even 1024x1024 (!), so every HD quality signal has to be converted to the fixed res of the TV. But maketing still calls then "high quality HDTVs".[/rant]
Anyway, we didn't name them, we're just following what the supliers list the "xxx-way" joystick, to be consistant if some newbie searches for questions on the marketed "49 way" name, when we only talk about it as "48 way"s. ;)
Why is a "dish washer" called a "dish washer"? It's a machine that washes; so why not call it a "washing machine". ;D

I'm just saying for illustration purposes. Took me a bit (personally) to wrap my brain around how the thing actually worked until I figured out the 49th way was dead center. Then it made more sense to me.

It's not too hard to visualize :)
Urebel has a nice grid

Totally understandable, I went through the same thinking process. I was trying to tell all readers why we still call them 49 & 8 ways (ie: marketing) so nobody has to go through that part, too. ;D
Didn't mean to sound harsh or anything, with all the winks and smiles. Except for the rant part, of course; that was supposed to be harsh, but nothing to with joysticks at all. :)
-
I didn't take it poorly. I'm too laid back for that.
Now, as for FLINKLY, encouraging a fight; you should be ashamed. ;)

The original Berzerk giant bat handle stick, Bubbles... any more?
